Speed Cameras Illegal?[^] Court case will decide if £600,000,000 in fines must be repaid, if bans overturned, and if they are, differentials in insurance costs to be repaid. Could be as high as £1 Billion because politicians are idiots! Woo Hoo, they will also, by law have to remove every single camera, and they can only be returned if they are decided upon by parliament. That is EACH ONE will have to be approved! The End of the Speed camera could be nigh!

Is there a realistic chance of the case succeeding? (or the others piled behind: surely, if the first fails, there is less and less chance of each of the next getting any further than a quick hearing?) The thinking behind the challenge is excellent but governments hate to lose or be seen to lose.

Hard to call this one, but the law is on their side, so I wish them well.

Thats a shame. I quite liked speed cameras. I always considered them an 'inobservancy tax'. The more the govt can raise on stupid people who dont keep their eyes open the better for me!

Morality is indistinguishable from social proscription

Agreed. When driving I take notice of those circular signs with numbers in the middle. Apparently they are used as an indication of how fast you are allowed to drive. My car has a pointy stick thing that moves round a sequence of numbers that indicates the current speed of the vehicle. I cross reference the circular sign and the pointy stick position and adjust the vehicle speed accordingly. Works wonders.

My new favourite phrase - "misdirected leisure activity"

Strange, I dislike being in a surveillance society. I do not need cameras to enforce the driving speed, as they encourage people to drive to the rules, not drive safely. Cameras can not tell if you are drunk or driving dangerously, only a policeman can do that. Less cameras more cops!

I think they should be camouflaged and hidden in bushes to catch the unwary.

The cops? They should just be camouflaged and hidden in bushes, period, so nobody can find them. :-)

Even if the 1st part happens the only thing that will change is that parliament will pass monthly legislation authorizing every requested new camera that was provided to them by the deadline and fines will be increased to give parliament a share of the money.
