I'm reading a book by a guy called Loius Theroux ( from memory ), in which he chases up various fringe elements in the US who he spoke to years before for a doco, to see how their lives turned out. One group were basically gun nuts expecting the US government to take the country by force. The point is, the guy who was really hardcore, lost his house b/c he refused to pay property taxes. Apparently, NO-ONE there paid income tax, but to not pay property tax was to really hardcore. From this and other things I have read about IRS under funding, I get the impression that to not pay income tax in the US is really not that hard. I dunno how it is here, but my accountant did ask me if I wanted to avoid paying any tax at all when we first met. I said no, tho.

true. only a small percentage of returns (return = filing with the IRS) are audited. right now they've a program under way where if you owe more than $10,000 ( in arrears ) you can negotiate a pennies on the dollar settlement. But if they ever decide they want you, you're toast.

Mike - typical white guy. The USA does have universal healthcare, but you have to pay for it. D'oh. Thomas Mann - "Tolerance becomes a crime when applied to evil." The NYT - my leftist brochure. He should have gotten himself ordained by Churches-R-Us.com As I understand it, the Supreme Court leans so far over backwards to keep from deciding which religions are OK that all one needs to do to claim tax-exemption as a church is call oneself "Reverend."

I do my best to accurately fill out my taxes. My wife owns some S corporation shares which complicate our taxes enormously. One time the IRS told us that we have to pay taxes quarterly because we fall in the alternative minimum tax category (only happened, once, after that she quit and became ‘stay at home mom’). Last year I was audited, not the one were you have a personal meeting with the IRS guy, but a 'paper audit' where they just tell you, you owe this much and you better pay up. IRS said we owed thousands of dollars. I went to see an accountant, and he does our taxes now. We went from owing 5k to the IRS owing us 1k for last year’s taxes. I am small potatoes, these guys make big $$$, with complex estates, they must have hired an accountant, but decided to tweak things after the fact.

Everyday I'm more amazed what these guys get away with, I am amazed at the lack of media coverage. Someday perhaps I will think it normal and not give it a second thought... not there yet.

To rate your accountant, ask him how much two plus two is. If he answers "four," he's not very good. If he answers "somewhere between three and five," he's still not very good. If he answers "How much do you want it to be?" He's a keeper.

One the principle of "it takes a thief to catch a thief" do you suppose we should hope for more effective enforcement which might put a crimp in these big dollar cheats? I think not...

As far as the driver issue I've read that he thought it was a personal favor from a business partner. I'm from SD, a Republican, but I did vote for Daschle a couple of times. I have met him a few times; when I told him who I was (I have a cousin who is very influential in state Republican matters) and that I voted for him, his jaw actually dropped. He was pretty good for our state. However, he is a lot shorter that I thought when I first met him. I at least think his excuses are better than our Sec of Treasury and that "I couldn't figure out Turbo Tax!"

His tax problems would be enough to sink him if he were a Republican applying for position. I am a member of neither party. A Republican is a Democrat-light (at least now a days). If I wanted to be a Democrat (socialist) I would associate with the real deal and not the copy-cat want-a-be. A pox on both their houses.
