Went to buy some online, most vendors are sold out. It's hard to even get remanufactured rounds, I finally found a vendor. This conversation pretty much summarizes situation.[^]

Buy yourself a reloader and make your own ammunition. I had a pretty good stock of powder, primers, and bullets already, so I haven't bought any lately. I think it should still be easier to get reloading supplies than ammunition.

Looking for .357 and 38, very common rounds, since November when it was available and was very inexpensive. I'm hoping things will calm down. I'd rather not spend a lot of money on something that may just be short term. However NRA sent out an alert about 3 months ago; For example, Arizonas bill says, “Beginning January 1, 2011, a private citizen or a retail vendor shall dispose of all noncoded ammunition that is owned or held by the citizen or vendor.” Tennessee’s says, “All non-coded ammunition . . . shall be disposed.” And in Pennsylvania, “An owner of ammunition . . . not encoded by the manufacturer . . . shall dispose of the ammunition[^].” and.[^]

Good point! Perhaps it is worth the investment, and it sounds like a good skill to have.

Yep, I went to WalMart over lunch looking for ammo. They just got a shipment in last night that was actually unexpected. And they don't have a lot of anything right now. I got 500 rounds of 9mm, but I had hoped for 1000. The lady behind the counter said that she heard from what she thought was a reputable source that manufacturers only spend so many months of the year producing for personal use, and the rest for military. The coming of Obamanation has prompted the public to deplete the personal reserves. I have no idea about the credibility of her source.

I found this guy that reloads shells, has good reviews on Usenet; his web page has good prices. I will give him a try. From what I can see people who are reloading shells for fun and profit seem to have a good business in this economy.

Do you buy the slugs? If you do the slugs may have to be tagged, in which case there is no advantage in reloading yourself?

I buy the slugs (bullets). The last ones I bought were about 6 months ago...no tags. You can also make bullets, which is fairly inexpensive. You can melt lead over a gas burner and you can buy a mold to form the bullets. You want to avoid pure lead and certain alloys of lead, because they are too soft and will foul your barrel. Wheel balance weights are pretty good, but the best (if you want to push the velocity up) is the lead alloy that was used in linotype machines. Newspapers don't use linotype much any more, so it is hard to find.

The concern is the right to own firearms will be taken away during this administration. The phenomenon we are experiencing are people loading up before that happens. Has nothing to do with Obama specifically. === On an unrelated topic my Microsoft Word 2003 flags Obama as a misspelling and the recommended suggestion from Word is to replace it with Osama.

In handling bullets, reloading your own, especially if you make your own, isn't there a significant risk of lead poisoning?

Which part of "American" don't you understand? Many of the population groups who came here had very strong cultural memories of tyrants taking their weapons away and than taking away anything resembling a right. The right of self defense therefore became instutitionalized at the very foundation of our civilization. It is considered as sacred and fundamental by most Americans as any right you could mention. A far more pertinent question is: "WTF is it with you lot and abortion and homosexuality?"

Chaining ourselves to the moral high ground does not make us good guys. Aside from making us easy targets, it merely makes us idiotic prisoners of our own self loathing.

Mike Gaskey, put up a link to youtube on just that subject as it realated to UK. Not sure what day he put it up. --- It will be a gradual process, or perhaps not so gradual. If you read through the thread you would see that some states and federal government (US) are attempting to put tags in ammunition, which will drastically increase cost of ammunition. It's these 'little' steps by which we lose our rights. Buying up ammunition is not an unreasonable response.

In handling bullets, reloading your own, especially if you make your own, isn't there a significant risk of lead poisoning?

I don't think there is much danger in handling a lead bullet. The two biggest dangers are getting burned by molten lead and breathing the fumes. If you handle the molten lead carefully and do it in a ventilated area, there isn't too much danger. Lyman makes casting molds and has a good handbook on the subject.

I think that a lot of people should forget this obsession with stockpiling enough weaponry to single-handedly declare war on a small nation and do something about the escalating number of antibiotic resistant pathogens. It's difficult to care about individual rights when you've died of pneumonia or meningitis or whatever.

I am doing my part...I take all of the pills the doctor prescribes. Other than spending millions on a home laboratory, what else should I be doing and how would buying a few rounds of ammo here and there distract me from that?
