Although not impossible that ELF or similar organization might be responsible, there certainly is no credible evidence that they are. It is far more likely that garden variety pyromaniacs are involved. ELF usually focuses on construction projects and the like that are "clearing the land, damaging the ecosystem", rather than burning up the very ecosystem they want to "protect" by setting brush fires or forest fires. I keep hoping they'll torch the Gore mansion...

That it may have been the coalition for the the liberation of itinerant tree dwellers. Seriously, though, violent activist groups often do more damage to their cause than good. Imagine if you will a national conference of extremist environmentalists spanning 4 days in a beautiful meadow. On the 5th examine the environment after they have left.

I have to say I'm normally with you on the eco-crap thingy but I feel this may be a little too far fetched: much more likely the arsonists are no more or less than plain old arsonists with no agenda other than delighting in setting fires and watching them rage. If a group were responsible and the connection could be made I don't think Australia would shirk at bringing them to justice, wherever they may be and I'm prety sure they'd get plenty of help considering the appalling consequences of these fires.

Actually, it may well be a good way to stop loggers from cutting one down. It does only minor harm to the tree, and may well cause it to be left uncut rather than risk damaging a saw. [edit] besides, the purpose of the nails is not to protect the tree so much as to hurt the logger by damaging saw blades, thereby hopefully slowing down the cutting operation. No one said ELF was sane, or anything other than a terrorist group, however, you haven't demonstrated even the remotest link in this instance.[/edit]
