Sentences too lenient?[^] All that needs doing is for their private parts to be immersed in the same caustic soda they used on their victim, making sure that their organs will be unable to be used for anything other than excretion. Once their bits have been sufficiently mutilated by the soda then throw it over them to scar them for the rest of their lives. Then lock them up for life as they are rapists. I only go for this feeble punishment as the death sentence sadly is not available for such crimes.

My new favourite phrase - "misdirected leisure activity"

or, indeed, any crimes in the UK. In any case, some crimes are so repugnant that the perpetrators should either be incarcerated for life, in solitude, with no possibility of appeal/remission or offered the choice to be executed so as to save us all the taxes and having to take care of them through the rest of their worthless lives. Perhaps it is time for a chnage in the law through a referendum. Oh, wait, Brown doesn't like us to have a mind of our own...

You could always bring back hanging. These guys are a perfect example of why capital punishment was used for most of history.

Jon Smith & Wesson: The original point and click interface Algoraphobia: An exaggerated fear of the outside world rooted in the belief that one might spontaneously combust due to global warming.

The do-gooders would stop it in its tracks :( As we can't kill them I'd settle for solitary confinement until they die. Feed them with as little as possible to keep them alive. Cut them off from the world ie no TV, radio, newspapers etc as they are not worthy of participating in decent society. Forfeit the "right" to see family members. I could go on. As I've mentioned before this will hopefully encourage people to behave but, if not, then they will be removed from the outside world into a place where they deserve to be.

Sadly those sorts of crimes also happen in places where they do have the death penalty. They should be locked up for life and I see nothing against leaving lengths of rope in their cells.

Yes, but repeat offenders are extremely rare...

I am fairly liberal when it comes to my philosophy on rehabilitation of prisoners and usually have some compassion for those that commit a crime but to do what those kids have done? I don't even get the point. The hardest part is determining how it is even possible to punish individuals like that, effectively. For a certain segment of the criminal population I really like the island idea. (Send them all to one isolated island and let them sort themselves out) The reasoning is simple, it takes the responsibility for dictating a punishment out of our hands. The fatal flaw of course is Kurt Russel and Ray Liotta. They wouldn't be allowed on the islands.

Need custom software developed? I do C# development and consulting all over the United States.
If you don't ask questions the answers won't stand in your way.
Doing a job is like selecting a mule, you can't choose just the front half xor the back half so when you ask me to do a job don't expect me to do it half-assed.

Exactly. It all depends on intent. And to me, the most important thing for sentencing is looking at the circumstances of the offence and considering the probability that they with do it again, and whether or not it's possible to rehabilitate. Second is justice. If you're stealing food, we don't need to be too hard on you but you should still have to pay something. However, though I've always been fond of the island idea myself, I think we have an obligation to keep the dirty responsibility of dictating punishment. Without it, it would become way to easy to send people to that island with less and less justification. Somewhat like the public outcry from even pro-choice people over the "doctors" office that killed the baby that was born after inducing for abortion because the "doctor" was late. Out of sight, out of mind. Just my 2 yen.

haha, I'm thinking of switching currencies too. Still hopeful though that it (the stimulus) won't make too much of a difference (20% of what I have is not worth the fees!)

Yep. Matter of fact, I need to buy some yen in a couple of weeks. Sickens me to think that a year or two ago I could get 120 - 140 yen to the dollar, and last I looked it was below 90. Then I also have to wonder what currency is safe. :~
