A Canadian judge ruled Thursday that a man accused of beheading and cannibalizing a fellow Greyhound bus passenger is not criminally responsible due to mental illness. The decision means Chinese immigrant Vince Li will be treated in a mental institution instead of going to prison. The family of victim Tim McLean said Li got away with murder. rest of the story[^]

Repost[^]! ;) Such a "judgment" *ought* to be absolutely astounding. Yet, it isn't.

For what it's worth to the reader, here is the blogger Lawrence Auster's very sensible comments on this.[^] Consider, especially, "Laura's" comment:

Can you imagine how betrayed the McLean family must feel? Truthfully, I can't imagine it. Where can one go to absorb such an experience, to put oneself in their shoes? Perhaps to Greek tragedy with its fixation on the outer and inner dimensions of violence. Think of it. Every year, perhaps for the rest of their lives, these people must appear before bureaucrats to relive their son's death and to meet face-to-face the man who ate his eyes. It is they who have been banished from human society to an island, an earthly hell.

Absorb this truth: "It is they who have been banished from human society to an island, an earthly hell."

Well, you got me there; I concede. edit: I hope you understand that I was mocking a certain attitude frequently seen in this forum.

I can understand the family's anger and it would anger me as well to see a sane man get away with murder in this manner. I can't say if this man was sane or not, but I do believe that there are legitimate times when "not guilty by reason of insanity" is the correct verdict. I find it telling that both the prosecution and the defense were both claiming he was insane.

It's almost always a status-game for them; it's almost always about building their "careers" on the bones of innocents. Canada is so far gone into "liberalism" that were their rulers to decree that everyone commit suicide to "save the planet," a great number of them would obey. This reports some of the gruesome details not previously (so far as I know) released to the public: Yahoo! News: Man accused of beheading on bus pleads not guilty[^]

WINNIPEG, Manitoba – A man accused of beheading and cannibalizing a passenger on a Greyhound bus apologized to police when he was arrested and begged officers to kill him. The details emerged Tuesday as Vince Li started his murder trial by pleading not guilty. "I'm sorry. I'm guilty. Please kill me," Li said, according to an agreed statement of facts read in court. Li's lawyers are not disputing that he killed McLean, but they will argue Li was mentally ill and not criminally responsible. A psychiatrist told the court Li is schizophrenic and believed God told him to do it. Three dozen passengers were aboard the bus as it traveled at night along a desolate stretch of the Trans-Canada Highway in western Canada. Witnesses said Li attacked McLean unprovoked, stabbing him dozens of times. ... Li did not understand his actions were wrong, psychiatrist Stanley Yaren told the court. ... Li, who came to Canada in 2001, pleaded at an earlier hearing in August for someone to "please kill me." ...

Really? "Li did not understand his actions were wrong?" And just why should we believe the assertion of some damned psychiatrist? I think I get the "reasoning" of the psychiatrist ... the fact that he begged to be killed for what he'd "reportedly" done is the "proof" that he's innocent by reason of insanity. And, since he's innocent by reason of insanity, then clearly he could not have understood that it is wrong to murder someone.

some a-hole like this kills one of my family members and goes to a hospital instead of doing life (or death) in a prison, I'm obligated.

If you were offered the responsibility to render judgment on this man based solely on what you read in the media, would you have any problem accepting that responsibility?

Canadians, in the main, no longer seem to be normal human beings. Mark Steyn: Excusing the men who ran away[^] The new film ‘Polytechnique’ sidesteps the old norm of ‘women and children first’ Gamil Gharbi, nee Marc Lépine, massacred a class-room of women and the official liberal/feminist narative is that "Marc Lépine embodies the murderous misogynist rage that is inherent in all men." This (the facts of the event and the subsequent narative) is why Steyn's favorite nickname for Canada is "the unmanned Dominion." edit: "Liberalism," having gained control of most of the institutions of society, trains us up to be Eloi. The Canadian Morlocks have been at it longer, or at least more successfully, than ours.

No I won't take that responsibility based on what I read from the media or the web. If I have to pass a judgment I will have to dig out all the facts to my best ability. I may have a strong opinion about something, but that should not lead me to a careless judgement.
