For what it's worth to the reader, here is the blogger Lawrence Auster's very sensible comments on this.[^] Consider, especially, "Laura's" comment:

Can you imagine how betrayed the McLean family must feel? Truthfully, I can't imagine it. Where can one go to absorb such an experience, to put oneself in their shoes? Perhaps to Greek tragedy with its fixation on the outer and inner dimensions of violence. Think of it. Every year, perhaps for the rest of their lives, these people must appear before bureaucrats to relive their son's death and to meet face-to-face the man who ate his eyes. It is they who have been banished from human society to an island, an earthly hell.

Absorb this truth: "It is they who have been banished from human society to an island, an earthly hell."

I mean, apparently you belong to the 'barbaric' school of discipline. And if a wife dishonours her husband, why should he not be allowed his revenge? If his daughter dishonours her father, why is he not allowed his revenge?

But only the other day you agreed that the following described a future liberal society: Above these an immense tutelary power is elevated, which alone takes charge of assuring their enjoyments and watching over their fate. It is absolute, detailed, regular, far-seeing, and mild. It would resemble paternal power if, like that, it had for its object to prepare men for manhood; but on the contrary, it seeks only to keep them fixed irrevocably in childhood; How do you reconcile the two dystopian futures?

Steyn's nothing but a talking head who writes sensational trash so that he can con his supporters into allowing him to eek out a living. The reason he needs to eek out a living is because he's incapable of earning his own keep. I knew you were naive, but I didn't realize you were naive enough to grovel at the feet of Steyn. That's pretty low even by your standards. The most amusing thing about you is how dependent you are on other people's opinions.

Is there a contradiction? Where is it, I'm not seeing it. And, if you were willing to think about it, rather than trying to play "Gotcha," you'd also see that there is no contradiction. Training up the "citizens" to be Eloi is part of the mildness of happy-face despotism. So long as the "citizens" remain childlike in relation to The State, the velvet gloves can be left on. The point of happy-face despotism is not the good of the "citizens" but to make them incapable of revolt: if "citizens" are massacered here and there, that's a minor non-issue, so long as the "citizens" remain unfocused and unorganized, and child-like or Eloi-like.

 Dystopia 1. Wells' story is a ripping yarn satirising the British class system as at the end of the 19th century. The Eloi were the rulers; they are the evolution of indolence, where all is provided by the labour of others. The Morlocks were the ruled; they are the evolution of the providers, the miners, the sweat-shop workers, the servants below stairs, the machine operators. Out of sight, out of mind. The Morelocks did not reduce the Eloi to their 'childlike' state, they merely took advantage of it. And they don't farm the Eloi, they hunt. Dystopia 2. De Tocqueville posited that democracy could create citizens who related to the state as children do to a parent. Of course it could (so, too, could a charismatic despot). The difference is that in a democracy, you get to change your parents.

The USA and Canada have not yet renounced democracy for despotism, happy-faced or otherwise, and the "citizens" are actually citizens. Whether the majority of the citizens of the USA and Canada are resigned, docile, and 'childlike', you are in a better position to say than I. Childlike Innocent, trusting, simple, naive, credulous, artless, ingenuous, guileless, unfeigned, trustful. It really does depend on the child. :)
