ROFL. One of the major advantages of having a mortgage is the right to deduct interest from your taxes. Assuming these "low to moderate" income Muslims pay taxes, they've shot themselves in the foot. But wait until one of them can't pay and the state evicts the family. Every Muslim in Minnesota will be downtown scream insults at the state capitol. More philosophically, you're right Mike. Churches should get no special attention from the state. They should receive neither favor nor stricture from the state. Eliminating the entire 501-c3 tax-exemption boondongle for churches, art groups and universities would go a long way towards lowering taxes, and allow them to truly share in the joys and woes of the rest of us.

Given the original intent of the 1st amendment, there would be no problem with this, as it only applied to the federal government. However, it is difficult to understand how this would stand up to 14th amendment considerations that disallows state governmetns from placing groups of citizens into different legal categories.

Chaining ourselves to the moral high ground does not make us good guys. Aside from making us easy targets, it merely makes us idiotic prisoners of our own self loathing.
