According to Chris, Real Soon Now, moderators will be given "edit" and "delete" powers for every message. I would be remiss, if I didn't say very clearly, that nothing Stan, or Ilion, or bulg or anybody else with whom I have argued (or agreed) with, has ever said anything to me or to anyone else that deserved to be "moderated." This includes people who have been vulgar, used ethnic slurs, called me names, insulted my country, peed in the holy water, or who remind me that I thought Obama might be a good thing. All of the preceding should live forever in a litter box, of course, but I won't impose my thinking on their posts. Period. The only clear-cut case where moderation has been needed, in my humble opinion, was the one that started the foofarah over moderation: where someone posted a link that could cause harm or great incovenience to someone who unsuspectingly followed it. A second case - where some fly-by posted the same insulting message eight or ten times - might have made me consider it, if he'd kept up to the point of overwhelming the forum. In other words, Troy, you can come out of hiding. ;)

What's the point? The Soapbox is a poor imitation of its former incarnation and SoapBox 2 is just, well, tepid and bland. The forums all seem somehow neutered and a bit dull since the changes, hence, possibly, why they appear to be infrequently frequented by many of the former inmates. Pity.

Well, I don't miss the nastiness - even though I proved I was capable of being baited into taking part. And maybe occasionally baiting others, too. . . Nonetheless, I wanted to make the point that I don't really agree with Chris that we need moderators. I accepted the position mostly because I know I won't pull the trigger.

Your peashooter lost its pea :omg: Moderators can serve a purpose but currently, the named moderators considering their locations (USA,USA,Australia) will leave a sizable area of the world's surface without a sheriff, with or without pea/peashooter thus my observation previously that the regions covered by Europe/Africa and Asian sub-continent would benefit from their own duly elected/appointed sheriff. Regarding nastiness, us CP members, because of what we do, are supposed to be clever intelligent people. Childish behavior has no place here.

Some nastiness is not childish at all. I can admire the level the Outlaw displays without hoping to emulate it.

If, for example, somebody posted something objectionable at 11am UK time, Christian in Australia is probably getting ready to retire to his bed and not available to moderate. Depending on where you and Rob live in the USA, you could still be in the land of nod thus unavailable to moderate. So, for some period of time each and every day there is the potential for unmoderated mischief to happen.

                    gasp. mischief? egads!

Mike - typical white guy. The USA does have universal healthcare, but you have to pay for it. D'oh. Thomas Mann - "Tolerance becomes a crime when applied to evil." The NYT - my leftist brochure. Calling an illegal alien an “undocumented immigrant” is like calling a drug dealer an “unlicensed pharmacist”. God doesn't believe in atheists, therefore they don't exist.

Being that I am such a dignified type, I shan't join Rob and Mike in their rowdy display of humor. You will have to imagine the halo'd smiley. That potential exists in every forum of CP. Right now, if I were intent on mischief-making (something, of course, I would never do) I'd go after the lounge because of its volume, or ASP.NET because of its idiots.
