"The truth is useless. You have to understand this right now. You can't deposit the truth in a bank. You can't buy groceries with the truth. You can't pay rent with the truth. The truth is a useless commodity that will hang around your neck like an albatross all the way to the homeless shelter. And if you think that the million or so people in this country that are really interested in the truth about their government can support people who would tell them the truth, you got another thing coming. Because the million or so people in this country that are truly interested in the truth don't have any money." He may well be running for president in the next election. Sad thing is in some sense he may well be right about only a few people in this country actually caring about the joke that the republican, democrats and, thus our government has become. I would be careful putting stock in quotes without knowing the context in which it was made. I am inclined to give Jeb the benefit of the doubt until I can read the rest of the speech.

His first name and one of my favorite civil war generals have something in common. (Hint for CSS: Who is buried in Grant's Tomb?) I think he dead right, more's the pity. And it shows how badly off we are that this sort of cynical contempt for the informed electorate - as opposed to the sheeple -- is simply good, perceptive politics.

It was a speech about the state of politics. Hence why I said I think it is sad that he is most likely correct.

Exactly. And, I am sure that his counterparts in the democratic party feel exactly the same way. The system is broken; possibly beyond repair.

Did he actually say it? Jeb, I now understand, did not actually utter those words. A former intelligence officer named Al Martin wrote (on page 200 of his book The Conspirators) similar words as his way of summarizing what he felt was Jeb's attitude. Martin claims that he came to know Jeb rather well in the days before the latter achieved the governor's office.[^]

Interesting. It actually sounds like something O'Brien would have said to Winston Smith in "1984".
