Nope at least not in Maryland, now why would anyone think it would?[^] the founders recognized that high rates of taxation simply do not work: Hamilton in Federalist # 21 stated that, "If duties are too high, they lessen the consumption; collection is eluded; and the product to the treasury is not so great as when they are confined within proper and moderate bouds." the point being that if taxes (rates) are too high the result will be a reduction in the amounts collected. Kennedy (JFK) understood this, Reagan understood this, George Bush understood this but apparently: Maryland, New York, New Jersey, California all required a more current lesson in patriotism.

Mike - typical white guy. The USA does have universal healthcare, but you have to pay for it. D'oh. Thomas Mann - "Tolerance becomes a crime when applied to evil." The NYT - my leftist brochure. Calling an illegal alien an “undocumented immigrant” is like calling a drug dealer an “unlicensed pharmacist”. God doesn't believe in atheists, therefore they don't exist.

I hear you loud and clear - but the other side of the coin is that, for the vast majority of citizens, their after-tax earnings have barely kept up with inflation while for a small group - not all of them wise, nor honorable, or even particularly street-smart - their after-tax income has sky-rocketed. I'm all in favor of a flat tax - doesn't matter what you make or how you make it, if it's income you pay a percentage and there's no special deductions because you own rather than rent or manage a hedge fund rather than hedge-clipping business. But my guess is that an awful lot of the soaked rich folks would discover they were paying a larger share of their wealth under a fair-tax program than under our soak-the-rich-but-give-the-accountants-lots-of-loopholes-to-find system. Problem is, a lot of these folks would move to a country where they could pay less. Hard to tax someone who works for a multi-national who lives in the Caribbean and only spend 6 days a week in New York City.

enlightened self interest is alive and well. Makes you wonder whether we're asking too much of the government, reckon? that was rhetorical, it is patently obvious that we're expecting and/or demanding entirely too much. fyi - I absolutely agree with either a flat tax or the Boortz Fair Tax.

There is nothing you can do about it. Grab your ankles and deal with it, or do something about it.

in Maryland? the point is that individual states have significantly over committed to social programs that are unsustainable. California, New York, New Jersey and Maryland are 4 states that are discovering the hard truth. California is bankrupt but cannot find a way to stop spending. the other 3 I referenced are in the same fiscal boat. Texas has no income tax, for example, and it is the only state ading jobs today. Companies are fleeing the other states I reerenced because of the tax rates.

I'm confused. What were the options again?
