We are all somewhat afraid of change and of people/things that are different. That doesn't automatically make you a racist, as long as you control that fear.

mmm, I disagree to a certain extent, possibly racism is a natural defense to keep our species evolution controled. Regardz Colin J Davies

Everyone seems to claim not to be a racist, however racism always appears as an offensive issue. If somebody like :bob: appeared on our streets tomorrow, would they be discriminated on because of their skin color? Regardz Colin J Davies

No. We'd hate them because they're short. Old malted hops and yeasts never die, they just slowly stupify...

As always, it's bread and circuses. And while bread is down right now, circuses are way up.

Or it is just a leftover of herd mentality: if they are not part of our group then we better pay close attention to their actions. This is the same feeling that can be applied to cultural and religious unitarism (if that is even a WORD :) ). It seems that our family is not enough to satisfy our need of a herd. My dog acts just the same, if she meets a dog that is not medium sized and black she ignores it. What we call Racism is merely the human propensity to feel better about oneself by being able to identify with some socially sanctioned group - we all hate whoever society tells us it is ok to hate. And we do so instinctively. If we could effectively end "Racism" today, some other kind of "ism" would immediatly replace it. So yes, we would either worship Bob as a god, or burn him at the stake. I'm not a real reverend, I just play one on CP.

Most people I know that harbour racist feelings are just regurgitating their parents views. Doing as your parents do doesn't stop there either - many peoples political views will be a mirror image of their parents too. I think it is safe to say that there are fewer racists than there were a few decades ago, which is progress. Just comparing my fathers generation (he was born in 1936) with mine (1971) shows how things eventually improve, and I think a number of things have helped - a) there are more people from different ethnic backgrounds living in the UK (so racists actually get to see that hey - these people are just like us!) and b) better education.
