"And one of the points I want to make is, is that if you actually took the number of Muslim Americans, we’d be one of the largest Muslim countries in the world". What part of that do you disagree with? You really are pathetic. Obama must be really great if the worst you can do is criticize him for stating facts. Get a life.

What do you think should be done ? A third reich style roundup and mass killing of Muslims ? I know you like to kill people, so.....

The heart of this issue is whether saying that the US is an X country means that it is X to the exclusion of (or in precedence to) all Y != X. Plainly Obama was not saying that the US is a Muslim country to the exclusion of being a Christian country. If being a "Christian country" is merely a statistical statement, then secularists have no reason to deny it. If saying that the US is a "Christian Nation" is meant to imply that Christianity should be privileged by law, then secularists will certainly object. I have heard it said that New York is one of the world's largest Italian cities (I think it was Italian anyway). Likewise, there are roughly as many Jews in the US as there are in Israel. Obama's comment was in a similar spirit, highlighting that a large diverse nation incorporates a signficant sample of much of the world beyond its borders.

American Muslim Statistics - U.S. Muslims are Middle Class and Mostly Mainstream[^]

Key Findings * Native-born Muslims comprise 35 percent of the American Muslim population; of those, 21 percent are converts to Islam. * Immigrants account for 65 percent of the American Muslim population; ... * The Pew survey shows that there are roughly 1.4 million Muslims in America; this is in sharp contrast to the 6 to 7 million Muslims estimated by a 2001 survey (conducted by the Hartford Institute for Religious Research and co-sponsored by the Council on American Relations).

Even if the much higher "6 to 7 million" figure were correct, that would be only about 2%. AND, since 65 are foreign-born, the population *obviously* hasn't been in our shores for long. Most, even of the native-born, trace back only a few decades ... to when the Dems decided to (and the GOP agreed to let them) start importing voters from the third-world. Again, what planet is he on?

The point is not what proportion of Americans are Muslims, the point is how the Muslim population in the US compares to the Muslim populations in other countries. The entire population of Jordan is about 6 million, as is the population of Libya. That said, I think that Obama was stretching things in claiming that the US is one of the world's largest Muslim countries. He is simply trying to build diplomatic bridges and is exaggerating somewhat in the process.

                  May I remind you:

So, I give you some statistics ... and you wave your hands.

And there are, according to that Pew survey, about 1.4 million Moslems in the US, 65% of whom are immigrants -- there were almost no Moslems at in in America until this present living generation. What is the population of Indonesia, of "Pahkistahn," of Banglidesh? Of Egypt? Of (the Moslems in) India? Of (the Moslems in) China? Of (the Moslems in) Israel!? Of (the Moslems in) Nigeria? Of (the Moslems in) Malaysia? Moreover, and again I remind you, the Moslems in the US do not have cultural depth -- contrary to another claim Zero likes to make, Islam has nothing to do with the making of America.

Here on earth, politions often use what is called 'diplomatic language' where the concept will often overide the content. President Obama was using the, as previously noted, valid fact that the USA has one fo the largest Muslim communities in the world. He didn't say the largest or that the majority of Americans are Muslim, just that a large number of Americans are Muslim. The purpose was to build bridges with the Islamic world. I know this doesn't find favour with your 12th century Christian ideal of 'convert or crucify' but that's the way things are going. Would you rather have dialog - that means talking - or bombs? Your attitude seems to be in favour of the later, I prefer the former. ttfn
