Don't get me wrong, I love Microsoft; I love Bill; I got teary-eyed when Charles Simonyi said he's leaving MS, but: When I click on the volume icon in the systray and have to wait like 10 seconds for some pissant lil' window to popup, I say to my self, "why oh why did they let those VB developers write code in windows!" :mad::mad: What's your worst performing feature in Windows? Explorer.exe - in WinXP it stops responding and shuts down whenever an error occurs (several times a day). In Win2K it happens rarely, but when it does, it fails to repopulate the system tray. Activating any of the missing apps then requires a restart or opening a second instance, as the apps running there don't appear in task manager. Word of the day: Rotundacrat

In a better world we would have a "Purge Ram" button, which could reliably free up all Ram no longer being used, without losing anything important. Maybe one day, when I'm infinitly better at coding than I am right now, I'll manage to make such a tool, speeding up pc's for the rest of time ;P The following statement about your geekness is true.

The Explorer task in Windows 2000 is by far the wosrt. It is almost guaranteed to die within a few hours when I use it - perhaps it's something to do with my P2P software I don't know, but I do know that after a fresh install of Win2K, it suddenly came up with an Explorer error and that's with no other software on there! Only work-around is to kill the task with Task Manager and re-run it, but then I lose my tray-icons for my P2P software. Then I start playing Quake 3 and wonder why my ping is so poor! Yeah... Explorer on Win2k is quite flakey. That said, it's much improved with Service Pack 2, and doesn't bother me anymore provided i don't leave too many explorer windows open for more than a few hours. Worst performing would be browsing the LAN. It takes ages to get access to one of the other computers. As for things that bother me, I have a whole list: Can't customise the time format in the systray -- I want the date there too. I use detail view in Exploder and the column widths are constantly resetting to a horrible default value (I just wrote a hook program to fix this). I have a quicklaunch style appbar and it vanishes at random times. The new autoplay in XP. It wasn't broken in Win2K. In fact I hate all the cute 'helpful' stuff that does annoying things I don't want without asking. Some of them have settings deep in the dark heart of control panel which allow me to turn them off. Others, unfortunately, don't. Oh, I also hate 'My Documents'. No, I don't want to put all my data into one folder on my system drive. The favorits menu in IE is annoying if you have several items under a popup, it pops up slow, and if you add a new item, what the fuck is it sorted by!? Takes 20 looks up and down the menu to find it. And what is up with the custom icons? They show upp when adding the favorit, but after about 10 minutes they are gone and never comes back again.:mad: /Magnus

You can right-click on the My Documents folder, select Properties, and then move it elsewhere. I've assigned mine to J:\ (the root), a 700MB partition. When I run out of space on it, I know it's getting too large to back up to a CD.

Hey, i write some VB code. I'm not heavily into it, but i see a place for it, and use it when it makes sense to. But i can't say i like it, and for sure have seen a *huge* amount of really, truely, awful code written in VB. The standard File|Open dialog box, when on My Computer, decides to sort by Total Size instead of drive letter. EXPLORER.EXE and Connections Tray (?) causing the End Program dialog box to pop up when logging off or shutting down. EXPLORER.EXE crashing randomly on XP on my office machine (though it's otherwise rock-solid on all my other systems, I'm not likely to take the time to reinstall the OS just to fix this). Too many other idiosyncracies I can't think of right now...

Pet rant: the fact that when you select multiple files in explorer (say, 100) and you want to delete them. If any single file cannot be deleted the entire operation quits at that file, leaving you to reselect the remaining files (and hope a refresh/resort hasn't occurred) and try again. Why not just say "file x can't be deleted. Continue?". Unforgiveable. Rant #2: WTF does Outlook save attachments as read-only? ARGH! It does NOTHING to help safety/productivity. All it means is that you get stupid confirmation dialogs popping up whenever you try and move or delete them. cheers, Chris Maunder
