Nasty Virus

I've gotten myself a pretty bad virus, which near as I can tell is the go.google virus. It's particularly bad in that it prevents my virus scanners from updating their virus definitions. I've tried about five different virus and spyware scanners and every single one of them throws an update fail. None of these scanners seem to offer a manual update download anymore either, and their tech support offers no better advice than to make sure the firewall is unblocked. So what do I do? All my google searches on how to remove this thing just point me to more spyware scanners whose updates fail. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. X|

Reboot your computer into safe mode with networking and see how you go... Also, remember never to use more than one AV program at a time... There are also a few free online scanners, however I can't vouch for any in particular as I've never had to use them...

have you tried hijackthis? ive used that program on many occasions and it has worked wonders for me. their website is hijackthis.de you download and run the program then create a log file paste it in their site and it will let you know what is bad, and what is good. that may help in deleting the file that is running the virus.

if you don't worry about your bandwidth consumption, see if you can run trend micro's (bit defender) online scanning tool. it'll scan your files for you for free and removes viruses. here's the link to the site: Trend Micro HouseCall[^]. it was helpful for me a while back. hope you get cured! have you tried hijackthis? ive used that program on many occasions and it has worked wonders for me. their website is hijackthis.de you download and run the program then create a log file paste it in their site and it will let you know what is bad, and what is good. that may help in deleting the file that is running the virus.

It actually let me navigate to the site. The scan is running now (I assume). I'll let you know how it goes.

I looked up this go.google virus, and someone posted this as a solution, i'll paste the details here incase you can't navigate to the site -
1: Go to download.com and search for malwarebytes. Download the malwarebytes program.
2: Once downloaded, change the name of it from mbam.exe to a .com extension.
3: Run the program.
4: Once installed go to c:\program files\malwarebytes\mbam.exe and change the extension to ".com" like before.
5: Run malwarebyte (quickscan). *Note : it will not update at this point. Just run as is.
6: Delete all detected items and reboot.
7: Change mbam.com back to mbam.exe and run the program again.
8: You will notice that it will actually update now. Update and run another scan to remove any final traces.
9: All done!

Trendmicro just hung on an endless loop, apparently downloading some file or other to my machine. It said this may take a "few minutes". I finally gave up after nearly an hour. :sigh:

oh? yes it requires to download some plug in. if its a slow computer it does take time, for spyware doctor see if it installs if you disconnect your internet cable, it'll look for the updates but it might say no connection found, install updates later blah blah, and *might* just let you scan.

After restarting, not much has improved. Crucial websites are still being blocked, and the malwarebytes program still won't run. Spyware Doctor however is able to get its updates now. I'll try running a scan with that.

Spyware doctor found 33 infections, including 17 trojans. The bad news is, they won't remove the infections until I pay for the program. At the risk of be reprimanded for harsh language... just get commodo firewall + anti-virus suite. its got an anti-virus software, or you could get nod32's 30day trial version, that also removes infection without having to pay. i use both softwares, great at detection.

Basically every site I googled returned results recommending some anti-spyware program or other. I tried nearly all of them, incluring malwarebytes anti-malware. When I finally got the MBAM to update it's definitions, it didn't find anything wrong on my computer. I also tried Spyware Doctor. It found 15 different trojans but wanted me to buy the program before it would clean them. I finally gave up and reformatted the whole thing. Top 7 epic virus scanner fails: AVG - zero threats found Lavasoft Ad-aware - 3 tracking cookies found. Malwarebytes*** - ten tracking cookies found. Spybot S&D - would not even run. PareteoLog AV - Would not update/run HijackThis - four registry entries found. Once removed, scanners were able to get their updates. Did not detect the trojan though. Spyware doctor - Found fifteen trojans, would not remove them without purchase. *** This is the one most people rave about as a cure-all. Did nothing for me.
