modem connection speed

I have a US Robotics 56K internal modem for dial-up in a WinXP box. Connections at 38400bps are very slow and hang-up often:mad:. Connections at 33600bps are OK:). How can I limit the connection speed to 33600kbs. (In control pannel I am allowed to choose only standard values: 2400, 4800, 9600, 19200, 38400,...) Thanks in advance:rose:, Stefan B.

Sorry, But I do want to know since you can't setup the 33600bps speed, how do you know "Connections at 33600bps are ok"? this is my signature for forums quoted from shog*9: I can't help but feel, somewhere deep within that withered, bitter, scheming person, there is a small child, frightened, looking a way out.

In the handshake process the two modems negotiate the connection speed, beginning with the highest one. If connection fails at, let's say 38400bps, they try another lower speed. So, if my modem succeeds to connect at 38400bps I have a bad connection due to numerous transmission failures and retries. If it succeeds to connect "only" at 33600bps, it's (almost) ok, the connection is stable. But, anyway, I have succeeded to solve the problem: (Sometimes Linux guys are right: too much GUI and wizards lead to idiocy:() I have forgot about the old AT commands, commands that tell the modem what to do!!!!! So, for my US Robotics modem, the commands AT&U4&N16 solved the problem! (in WinXP:Control Panel->Phone and Modem Options->Properties->Advanced->Extra initialization command added &U4&N16) Stefan B.
