Hourly rate vs travel daily rate
-
I am currently working as a contractor on a project that will require me to travel to Norway to perform the initial installation ( :-D ). They asked me if I would be willing to charge a daily rate for the trip instead of my normal hourly rate. So I thought I'd poll the lounge: how do you usually decide on a daily rate for travel situations? Do you assume a regular 8 hour day + a few bonus hours each day?

Regular 8 hours per day including travel days, plus allowance for expenses, and Norway is ridiculously expensive. Count on $100 - $150 per day even if your contractor pays the hotel. And you really have to do the touristy stuff when you're there. Not the towns, the fjords and the mountains.

Only $100 per day? Are you trying to drain his bank account? A single beer cost me 40 Krona ($7) in Stavanger. And if he wants to eat decent while he is in Norway it will cost him 200-300 crowns ($35 - $50) per day. Not to mention that if he needs to take a taxi the fare will cost 150+ crowns ($25) or higher each way. In my opinion he should ask for 1000 NOK per day minimum. Best Wishes, -David Delaune

Well, I did write $100 - $150, and 1000 NOK is the same as $170. But considering that it must have been a long time since you were in Norway and that a beer there is actually at least twice the cost, he should probably charge $250 instead. And I need to upgrade my habits when I work abroad.
