Windows 7 and RAM
-
Now that I am done with my Masters degree I am going to be upgrading my machine to Windows 7 Pro and getting some more RAM to replace the lousy 1 GIG that I have been living with since 3 of my 4 GIG died a while ago. My question is has anyone really played around an seen a difference between running Windows 7 x64 on a box with 4 or 8 GB of RAM and seen a decent enough difference to make it worth my while to go out and get another 4 GB? Just the typical dev stuff on here (ie: MSVS, SQL Express, etc... MS Office) It already seems MUCH better running XP Pro X64 now that Ia m back to 4GB but I was wondering about anyone already running Windows 7 with 4GB vs. 8GB. Also, I was under the impression that Windows XP x64 could only USE 4GB max so I never went any higher than that. Can someone report that restriction is higher in Windows 7? Can't seem to locate anything concrete on that yet either although I am still looking around.

OK, I feel stupid now for even asking since I was able to locate the info myself in about 5 more minutes of searching using the RIGHT words :) http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa366778(VS.85).aspx#physical_memory_limits_windows_7[^] I should know better :) Still, anyone gone up to 8GB and seen a difference from 4GB?

I've gone from 8Gb (DDR2) down to 6Gb (DDR3). As I changed quite a few components, I can't say how much difference I felt it make, but using Resource Monitor I found that I rarely used all 8Gb, but I frequently used above 4 or 6Gb (including 'standby memory', which I'm lead to believe improves performance/responsiveness). Based on that I would say that 8Gb should make a small difference, though how noticeable I can't say. Currently using 3gb (plud 2Gb standby) with the following programs: SQL Server 2008 VS 2008 Outlook iTunes Firefox MSE
