    And I thought it was only South Africa, and other such countries split between 1st and 3rd world with those problems. A man broke into our flat once while my husband was writing an exam and I was home alone. All he took was my celphone, and ran out when he saw me instead of hurting me (I was very lucky), but I had to report it to the police for insurance purposes. At the police station they not only had no interest in following up the case, but made it quite clear that they thought I had probably just mislaid the phone and was falsely reporting a theft. That was all I needed after discovering a stranger in my home!

At least if you were in the US you could sue them for that. I used to be a sales rep so I needed my drivers licence.       Yes, traffic cops. I guess each country has it's own perception of these creatures, from growing up in SA my perception is rather synical I'm afraid. Picture this: You complete high school. Your dream is fulfilled - you get accepted to be a traffic cop. You go out and lay your first speed trap - and your first victim is caught (no, I do not like speeding). You have now reached the pinnacle of your career. It gets no better than this. Nothing further to work towards. What is promotion for a traffic cop - getting to test new drivers? There must be something further wrong with these bullies than just ego problems. :suss:

The last time I was pulled over, it was for turning left ( i.e. without crossing any other traffic ) at a roundabout and forgetting to indicate. The guy read me my rights !!!! Talk about someone who watched CHiPs too much as a kid, or maybe the A Team. I don't like speeding either, and it upsets me most that the cameras are at the bottom of hills in the middle of nowhere, and not around places like schools, where they are needed.           So.. Guess what happened last night??? [Please forgive me if my english and my spelling is a bit crappy.. I got very little sleep last night and I drank way too much coffee today :wtf:] My flat got robbed. Myself and my flatemate [Ciarán] were there. I luckily enough wasn't involved in any serious way. However the same cannot be said of Ciarán. He was really messed around.


          So... 2:10 in the morning... I wake up to see a figure standing in my bedroom door.. wearing a grey hoody but I couldn't make out the face... I was kinda half asleep [:zzz:] so I thought it was my brother after comming home from the night club and not so polietly asked "What do you want?"... a quick response of "Nothing" was given... fair enought... Brian lay's his head down to sleep.... 5 minutes later my flat mate comes running into my room shouting and screaming for me to lock the door, while he's grabbing my phone to ring the Gardaí [Police]... In those 5 minutes... ...Two men, fairly big, about 6 foot and stocky builds, walked into his room and dragged him out of bed. Robbed his watch [about €200], phone, wallet [With Credit Cards, Bank Cards and Cash] and some other stuff. They shoved a t-shirt [not my magerquark.de ones Uwe :-)] in his mouth and treathened to kill him... He was then brough outside [I was still in bed asleep at this stage :wtf:] where there were two more people waiting.. One said he had a gun but I doubt it.. [Guns are very hard to get over here].. and treathened to kill him, again, unless he pointed out his car, which he sensibly did. They were going to bring him up to the nearest ATM to make him withdraw money from his Bank and CC cards but Ciarán just kept saying that he'd give him the pin numbers, which he did, and when they were getting into the car he managed to get loose and run up to the flat... where he came into me... [Oh. .they also robbed some other stuff from teh flat.. PS 2 among the things] Anyway... we contact the Gardaí straight away and managed to get the Bank and CC cards cancelled almost instantly... Loads of other stuff happened after that that I can't really remember.. a bit of a blur.... Oh. Ciarán's car was a write off... completely gone... I have no idea how those bastards [forgive my language] walked away from the car alive. There was very little of it left after it was crashed.

          Damn, Brian! I'm glad that on the whole things turned out OK. Meaning that you and your roommate aren't physically hurt. It's pretty messed up how that stuff happens. I always try to figure out why someone does it, but I guess that's really sort of irrelevant, isnt' it? I can't believe there were four of them! Seems a bit extreme for some random takings. Maybe Ciaran will get his wheels back , yet.               This is why America doesn't ban firearms. Firearms were banned in Australia and crime rose...nearly 80%. What does this all tell you?

Ciarán knows very few people down here and it wasn't any of them. I'd say it was more thae fact that they were drunk and/or stoned and his room is the first in teh flat that you come across...
