How many parents that were premature babies have premature babies. What kind of life do people who have that have had excessive medical treatment to save their lives (the three year 20 surgeon team type). What would happen to heath costs in the USA if we were not so sue happy? (True non health care example: Oh, I spilled my coffee that I insist must be hot and burned myself it must be the fast food chains fault. Fast food lost thus signs now warn that the coffee is hot.) On another rant, here in Ohio we just spent many dollars to save the life of an inmate who over dosed so we could execute him the next week. I am sure this was done to prevent family from suing. Why do we award money to idiots? (see above) If I am dumb enough to stick my hand under the lawn mower, I deserve to have my fingers cut off. It is not the fault of the mower company for not putting on a warning label. Sorry bad day, djj

An impossible question to answer as data as collected is incomplete. However, this series of reports might enlighten you just a bit ... Global report on preterm birth and stillbirth (7 documents)[^]

From a patients safety aspect while in surgery, this is informative http://www.pssjournal.com/content/3/1/26[^] as is this Defensive Medicine Among High-Risk Specialist Physicians in a Volatile Malpractice Environment[^] where [quote] Many specialist physicians reported doing more for (or to) patients because of malpractice risk, the cost of which is mainly borne by health insurance. Resorting to unnecessary diagnostic tests, especially imaging, was extremely common and cut across specialties. More than 90% of all respondents reported ordering tests unnecessarily and more than 60% of physicians in all specialties except neurosurgery reported performing or requesting invasive diagnostic procedures. Within the group of physicians who practiced defensively, 70% reported ordering an unnecessary diagnostic test as their most recent act. The prevalence of assurance behavior, coupled with the unit of cost procedures typically ordered (eg, MRIs), lends weight to arguments that the total cost of defensive med

Keep clinging to your delusions of what life is like in Britain and Australia, compared to that in the USA, if it gives you comfort. Given the image of the USA that your posts portray, you need all the comfort you can get in the land of the twee and the wholly depraved. As to my perception of Britain: it is not a grand old country; it is a run-down, tatty old country. As you will see when if the 2012 Olympic Games are held in London. Slave of Lizzie II? No. Monarchs have to toe the line, or they are deposed. Slave of B'Liar? No. He stood down from politics on 27 June 2007, despised by most of the 'peons', hence a liability to his party. Slave of B'Ruin? No, he is likely soon to be voted out of office; again, by the 'peons'. I have explained the nature of the CCTV cameras to you before. However, as the gin your mother put in your formula, together with your subsequent drug fuelled depravity, appear to have destroyed your memory, it would be pointless my repeating myself.

It's amusing to me how rarely you can spell my name right. If all I do is twist words, why are you incapable of twisting them back ? When I make small steps of logic to point out what I consider the fallacy of your words, why is it that you can't prove where my error is ? Why is it that saying you have no private property in the USA because you pay land tax is not twisting words in your mind ?

No, the legal system as it's abused in American is a form of capitalism, not socialism.

The gov telling mortgage brokers & banks to give mortgages to obviously unqualified wanna be home owners is NOT the blind pursuit of ROI in a free market. It was a market distorted by government interference. The gov forcing major oversight on companies for bailing them, and demanding re-payment of the debt is NOT transferring debt from the private to the public sector. The gov ends up with more control, charges the original debt off to the tax-payers, then uses the returned money for off budget 'expenses'.

I agree that government intervention in any market is a bad thing. I agree that pressuring Fannie and Freddie to buy more mortgages for the very low income (i.e. people who couldn't afford to purchase the property) was a bad thing. But ... mortgages were no longer loans sitting lenders' books, they were a commodity. They could be sold and re-sold indefinitely. If the borrower could not meet the terms of the mortgage, the property could be refinanced or sold. It is little wonder that brokers, lenders and the securities market were lobbying the government for wider home ownership. Both Clinton and Bush milked it for the minority vote. The reckless pursuit of ROI in the mortgage market had already commenced. Government endorsed and accelerated it.

Paul Volker has been put back in his box. No effective controls will be enacted. The immediate reaction to the crisis was bail-out the banks. The debt was transferred from the private sector to the public sector, no questions asked. Banks could only make the TARP repayments because they are on the government life-support system. This backing (FASB - 'mark to fantasy' on assets, Fed - access to cheap credit, FDIC - issue low cost debt, SEC - phoney stress tests) has increased the value of their stocks, enabling them to raise additional equity. The reality is that the banks remain bankrupt. So, perhaps the government is holding onto the TARP money until it is needed again (     ).

When I was designing large scale evacuation systems (for refineries, airports etc.) we didn't bother with the US market because there were too many cases of companies being sued by survivors who would have been doing KFC impressions. As a result so many evac systems in the US are worthless. :sigh:
