Well, they did not consciously do it. We are on the way to semi consciously doing it, by breeding 'superbugs' through overuse of antibiotics, especially in the production of food.

Apparently, we've all (well, maybe not CSS) been having far too much sex, and it's bad for the environment... Along comes Eco Sex... clickety[^] Interesting read if only for a laugh, but a truly scary punchline - "the best kind of sex is that which doesn't produce babies"... now this is true for most of your life, but these childless eco-warriors don't just want people to reduce the number of kids they have, but to consider not having ANY!!

The main problem with this is that it is getting to the wrong people, that is the educated, reasonably wealthy (by world standards) people. This group is already shrinking in population. Try convincing the uneducated, dirt poor hoards not to have kids, first you need to educate them, with education comes a wider horizon and hopefully a more sane (from my POV) viewpoint on breeding 6+ kids to a family. Oh yeah and shoot every 3rd politician in Africa, no make that anywhere.

Although I hardly qualify as a "greenie", I think the point is somewhat valid. I don't think it is a necessity to have children, not for everyone. I certainly don't think it is necessary to have 6+ children per household. I would never suggest that regulating this by law would be an acceptable approach, after all that's been tried with horrific outcome. All I'm saying is that education on the consequences of birthing a child could be beneficiary. Even the simplest of minds (he's in here somewhere...) should be able to understand that we do not have the resources to susteain an infinite number of people, and I for one think the current population growth is scary. Ironically it's for a large part due to our achievements, as several others has pointed out before me. More accurate weapons lets us kill more precisely, increased efficiency in drugs lets us live longer (and forces the bacteria to morph), and so on. I will not claim I have the solution to this, nor even an IDEA of a solution. But I do believe the problem is easy enough to identify. //L

There is a group of nut jobs that advocates homosexuality for this reason. Overpopulation is a real crisis that is looming, but I'm not sure that this book is going to solve it.....
