    I blame the '80s... :suss:

So they took me down to the gallows And this boy, he said to me: "Why do you smile, when the rope's around your neck?" I said, "I tell you boy, when i get back..."

Sigh... the '80s... what a totally shite decade to grow up in (I was born in 1971). The music sucked, the clothes sucked, the attitude sucked ... in fact, I can't think of much to redeem the entire decade (The Smiths and New Order mebbe). So depressing. I recently ended up in a local nightclub and unfortunately it was 80s night ... the horror ... I couldn't take it for long - I mean, "Hey Mickey your so fine" just doesn't make me want to shake my tush. :-D :-D :-D Perhaps I should start lying about my age ... my lucky bastard brother was born in '63, so had his formative teenage years during the heady punk era. Not fair!

Just got a CD with some early Eddie Murphy stand up comedy acts. First off he should have stuck to stand up, damned funny (damned rude too.) But what struck me was this one particular skit where he is talking about AIDS and homosexuals. I suddenly realised (judging from how he was dressed) that this skit was back in the 80s when AIDS was just surfacing. Some of the stuff he joked about would definitley not go down well in this day and age. I just thought it is strange how fast times change. How things can go from, his words, "a funny faggot disease spread by kissing and toilet seats", to the situation we have (especially in Africa) now. Just an observation :)

I've got his Delirious and Raw albums (on MP3), and they're really funny, as old as they are. I agree with your observation as to how back then his gay jokes were much more widely accepted than they are today... at least that's how it seems. If you're looking for other really funny comedians from the 80s, check out Sam Kinison (RIP). He's got some outrageous comedy, which in my opinion, blows Eddie Murphy away. Regards, Alvaro

Actually, i'd rather blame the decade i grew up in on the problems of others... there's a lot more of them, and most probably already know it.

The bit where his girlfriend comes home with AID's on her lips ? You have to admit, life is funnier when it's not PC. BLAME ? The 80's RULED. 80's music especially blows the garbage they have today out of the water. Yeah !! What about Deep Purple ? How could you like all that stuff and NOT like the 80's stuff that evolved from it ? Surely you liked GnR ? I've got his Delirious and Raw albums (on MP3), and they're really funny, as old as they are. I agree with your observation as to how back then his gay jokes were much more widely accepted than they are today... at least that's how it seems. If you're looking for other really funny comedians from the 80s, check out Sam Kinison (RIP). He's got some outrageous comedy, which in my opinion, blows Eddie Murphy away. Regards, Alvaro

Robin Williams Live at the Met is also funnier than Eddie, but Eddie is sure at his best in front of a crowd. Didn't he just go on to make some of the worst movies in history, 48 hrs and Beverly Hills Cop notwithstanding ? Oh, Trading Places also rocked.
