Yeah, I saw that on the news last night. Just insane. I was curious if the school flew the US flag that day. If they did, how would a student wearing a flag on their shirt be more inflammatory than flying a US flag? And I must have missed that school board meeting where they voted to secede from the US and join with Mexico instead. Sure, if the shirts were causing tensions because of a flag, then anyone wearing any flag should be told to remove them as well. Does that mean no more US flags on St. Pats Day, or no one wearing crosses on Yom Kippur or how about someone wearing a yarmulke or a symbol of ancient Rome on Good Friday? The school district has it right...they have posted on their page: "The Morgan Hill Unified School District does not prohibit nor do we discourage wearing patriotic clothing. The incident on May 5 at Live Oak High School is extremely unfortunate. While campus safety is our primary concern and administrators made decisions yesterday in an attempt to ensure campus safety, students should not, and will not, be disciplined for wearing patriotic clothing. This matter is under investigation and appropriate action will be taken."

One has to wonder how wearing the flag, makes Americans more free. I agree that he should not be stopped from doing it, but that he did it is hardly a heroic act.

It's not a big deal, it's not immediately obvious, that's why people like me exist to move posts and explain why we did it. Anything political is more than welcome here, or in one of our other soapbox type forums ( several exist for complex historical reasons, but none is more apt than another, so long as anything that people might get hot under the collar about, does not appear in the lounge ).

I don't get it myself. I'm american, if I was for some reason to wear an american flag and be told something like this I would be more than happy to inform them exactly where they could stuff their offended sense of apparent nationalism as they have no right not to be offended by my simple presence. If they were acting like the kinds of idiots I've seen, or wearing them deliberately to provoke a response like this I could see taking action against them. But if it wasn't organized(or at least they can't prove it) and they were just going about their day, I fail to see the issue. This isn't PC, it's just plain stupid. But you know why they do it? Because of the flag waving idiots who go out of their way to cause conflicts over such things. It's a war of stupid vs stupid and the only people who win are the ones who point and laugh. So far I'm well ahead of things there.

You know, I woulda been mad at them wearing the flag because, They aren't supposed to![^] Somebody is cheapening our flag to make a buck. Selling one of those shirts would be a misdemeanor in DC...
If I have accidentally said something witty, smart, or correct, it is purely by mistake and I apologize for it.

Or had the flag code read to him. Especially the part where they consider that desecrating the flag and then the part about how to dispose of it (preferred method is burned)

Wow... What a pitiful set of rules.

Love that speech... I know it's a chick flick, but it's still good. Rules like in that link are fine for government and military ceremonies, but I don't think forced patriotism really embodies the spirit of this country. Freedom of expression should apply to the symbols of the country just as it does to everything else. I'd like to see a bunch of T-shirts made with the flag printed on them upside-down, on fire, and covered with graffiti. Why? Not in any sort of protest... Just to show that it can be done. To stretch the limits of the first amendment and show that no matter how insulting the statement, it's still protected by the Bill of Rights. THAT would be something worthy of national pride.
