today i tried to close the MSN Messenger application and got the following message: --------------------------- MSN Messenger --------------------------- There are other applications currently using features provided by MSN Messenger. You must close these other applications before you can exit MSN Messenger. These applications may include Outlook, Outlook Express, MSN Explorer, and Internet Explorer. --------------------------- OK --------------------------- What? Those application used to run without MSN Messenger running, but now they can't? WTF? Michel It is a lovely language, but it takes a very long time to say anything in it, because we do not say anything in it, unless it is worth taking a very long time to say, and to listen to.

- TreeBeardI hated the message I'd get telling me some functionality would be lost in other programs if I dared close Messenger. So I got Trillian.[^] :-D [clickity edited :-O] BW "I'm coming with you! I got you fired, it's the least I can do. - TreeBeardI dumped Messenger as soon as I discovered Trillian. AIM and ICQ are gone now, too, and I haven't missed them a bit. At least Trillian doesn't try to take over my machine (or crash it, as all versions of AIM did). - TreeBeardI use it at home still, and yeah, it's a pain how it links in w/ IE (oooh, i *really* needed those icons in HoTMaiL). At work i just use Trillian, and skip all the problems.

- TreeBeardI made a little experiment and opened Task Manager and killed the process manually. It restarted itself, and I cannot login anymore, nor have access to the hotmail account, and the "Forgot your password?" feature tells me the action could not be performed. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGGHHH  Michel It is a lovely language, but it takes a very long time to say anything in it, because we do not say anything in it, unless it is worth taking a very long time to say, and to listen to.

- TreeBeardCheck you have not inadvertantly told Outlook or OE to show your MSN contacts, and aren't visiting a website like msn.co.uk that reads your contact list.

- TreeBeardYes but you must authorise the site to access your Passport information first, and it *may* still be done client side. Recently I think the methods changed because some people use their e-mail addresses as their Messenger names and Microsoft did something to change that as it was a privacy risk. I've looked all over msn.co.uk (which used to show which of my contacts were online, like Outlook, etc) but can't see them now - maybe it was pulled altogether?
