I wouldn't mind visiting Australia, but I wouldn't want to live there. I just wouldn't feel safe, what with their repressive gun laws and all. I could carry CGs weapon of choice, but it's just a matter of time before it is outlawed as well. When pitchforks are outlawed, only outlaws will have pitchforks!

You'd be suprised how many Aussies say: "I wouldn't mind visiting the US, but I wouldn't want to live there. I wouldn't feel safe being surrounded by people with guns" The difference in perspective amuses me. I guess we all just get comfortable with whatever we're used to, hey :)

They will have to run state-approved software, it will signal the ISP and government. If a virus is detected, the software will inform the ISP and your internet will be shut off until the issue is resolved. Special permits and licenses can be granted to certain users (for a price of course) who run unsupported OS. It really isn't' that hard to fathom Ian.

If you actually read up on the proposal (rather than just the news.com.au summary or the alex jones propaganda), all they're really going to be able to do is make it legal for an ISP to kill a client's connection if they detect that the client's machine has become an open spam relay or has joined a botnet. The Australian government is far too incompetent for anything more complicated to actually work. Plus, it's looking like they're going to get kicked out at the next election anyway, so the chances of this ever becoming law are pretty close to zero.

I wouldn't be surprised, I have been round-and-round with CG on the subject of private gun ownership in the past. Needless to say, we didn't see it the same way. :)

We were watching a Cops type show tonight, and I did not like it at all, they were basically mocking how heavy handed US cops were being. But, thing is, they have to be, b/c they have to consider that anyone they pull over, could be armed. Our poor cops, having to deal with the fact that almost no-one they ever deal with is likely to own a gun. How unsafe they must feel.

No.. but the real news about how badly the Aus govt is handling the internet is bad enough. And there is this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censorship_in_Australia[^] And a list of banned games[^], including L4D2 and other games which are merely violent.

Well, that much is true. None of it affects me, but I've heard about it, and I do disagree with it. But, I also don't see why games should be allowed to have any content they like.

Maybe not anything (I wouldn't object to banning the Japanese rape game, though I wouldn't take action to ban it if I were a government), but the Aus govt is going a bit far with the restrictions there. Ok, so much of it is a result of not having something above MA15+, but that problem is easily solved. Effectively they're now treating adults as if they are 15 year olds.
