Not more than usual. I found out about the futility of everything when I was about 4 or 5. It's a good thing really because I know I don't have to try - I can be as lazy as I want to.

No, what you did do is come up with an excuse to not accomplish anything. In your eyes you can now justifiably sit on your butt, become a looser and still in the end 'win' NOT because you accomplished anythign notable, but because you think you figured out the 'mystery'. You want to impress me Harold? Get up every morning at 6am and look at your self in the mirror. I mean REALLY look at your self, and then get ready to go to a job that pays your bills so that the rest of (apparently stupid folk) in society don't end up having too. Keep deciding that even though you are going to die someday, getting up and PARTICIPATING in life rather than just EXISTING is worth it. In other words Harold. Grow up. Piss moan and groan all you want, but do it on your own time and leave the rest of society out of it. If you have it 'all figured out' then why are you here? Just to extol your 'wisdom' on the rest of us? My bet is that this response was a complete waste of my time and you will come back with some 'one liner' witty retort that falls out of the loosely arranged file cabinet you call a mind, and then I may feel compelled to respond to you, and we may go back and forth a few times, but in the end, I will win. Why? Because I care, and you apparently don't. You have given up. Come back at me with something Harold. I dare you to wake up and THINK. Man oh man, there are SOME people who I would JUST LOVE to spend some time looking at their DNA.

Not really, I wouldn't 'win' that way anyway. There is no way to win.

Continue. Winning the argument (assuming you will) does not make you win life either, though, so I don't know why you're even bothering to try.

Ah, but see, there in lies the rub. You say there is no way to win, yet you bothered to come back and convince me of that fact. If you are missing the irony here (I have no doubt that you truly are) the problem with your idealism is that by even trying to convince us here that there is no point in winning, you would win. You see, the ONLY REAL way that you can convince anyone that you are correct in your assumption here is to just go away and never come back, ever. If anythign we do, say or think about has no bearing on anything then why even try to convince us? Just go away and revel in your own knowledge as you watch us that apparently don't understand waddle around in our own lameness. But most importantly, just go away. Oh, and remember, by even replying to this, you are just adding fuel to my argument.

Well, that's really the answer to your whole argument. Ignoring my personal beliefs ( because you know what they are ), and assuming that we just live and die, then the reason to bother is that so long as we're alive, we experience the reality we create for ourselves, and can enjoy it. If we're lucky, once we're gone, the way we chose to spend our time here will continue to impact on the lives of others. So long as being alive is more fun than not existing at all, that's reason enough to do it, and enjoy it while we can. That's plainly not my philosophy in life, but I still think it's workable for those with no hope beyond this life.

You say that because you don't believe in an afterlife. Once you believe in an afterlife, you will see how false that statement is. :) Best to discuss this with CG, I expect oblivion at the end of my journey (I don't see life as a game).

Harold says that believing in an afterlife does not make it true. He's right. Not believing in one does not stop it from existing, if it does, however.

Well, I'd agree that he'd never find out he was wrong. My point is that the statement 'believing in an afterlife does not make it true' is both true, and pointless. Either there is one, or there is not. If there isn't one, then I guess people would still take comfort in their belief, and never notice that it did not pan out, but it would still not be true. The statement he made is irrelevant, it doesn't change if there is one or not.

The whole purpose of life is to continue. A simple bacterium will replicate, because that is what it does. All evolutionary adaptations are there to aid in the replication of the individual. So over time, adding an eye here or a tail there is simply increases the best adaptive fit in order to survive long enough to breed. Human intelligence is simply part of that evolutionary process. Dogs and Cats and Kangeroos all breed because their DNA has forced them, because that is what DNA does, it replicates. But these animals do not worry about why they are here or wonder about futility, they just breed. Humans are the same, we breed because we have evolved to breed because DNA needs to replicate. That is the purpose of life. We do not do this because of a master plan, and once one realises this, life becomes clear, open and explicable, there are no unknowns, there is nothing to plan for, simply live breed and oblivion.

You mean every Friday evening is random? You don't have a Master Plan going into the week? You have no idea you are going to do another "So Long Suckers!" post until it has slipped past your fingers? You think there are no unknowns, but you have no Master Plan? 99% of everything is an unknown! You not knowing that you have a purpose doesn't mean you don't. You came up from a sperm so God could let me know it was about noon on Friday. Happy find your purpose day.

And my point is that belief makes it true for the believer, otherwise it is not belief, merely hope.
