I hate talking about work in social settings. I like it because I've found people don't ask many more questions after that. If I suspect the person asking is a wanna be programmer or even worse, a computer game nerd, I'll say "I work for a Dutch finance company", that's also a pretty good conversation killer.

Yeah, that's one of the reasons I prefer to say "I'm a writer"... It's a conversation starter instead of a conversation killer, because people can more easily relate to it. If I say "I write software for a hedge fund," people always quiet down... Then I have to say "No, I didn't kill the economy." I get a good laugh for that, but the conversation is still dead at that point.

I work for a market maker. Most people don't know what that is, some think they do and hate me for it and then there are those that want to be traders.

I wish I didn't know what that was... Spent too much time in this industry :) Every group I've worked for has been buy-side though... Well, except for that brief stint working on the firm-wide trading platform... That was a real beast...

And if that doesn't teach us never to click a link posted by CSS, I don't know what will.

It says a lot about your mind when you picture someone as a fat midget stripper without a reason... You should stay away from the internet for a few months, or years (one can only hope...), maybe that will help you, you little racist troll.

Lucky for me, the firewall of my work block my access to almost every link. I've never been more happy about that

Yep, it's a nice, generic term... When I have to answer the main phone (When everyone else is off the desk), and they ask who I am, I generally say "I'm their programmer" or "I'm the resident geek"... Anything else just sounds pompous.

Yeah way better than "I'm a computer scientist" which the locals that studied 'puters in college are heard to say now and again! I studied art in college and am known around the office as "the guy that gets shit done". I kinda like that! :-\

See, that's a good title. I also sometimes describe myself as "The computer god" or "Miracle worker" (A little tribute to James Doohan). As for "computer scientist"... One of the few things I remember from college, though I can't remember which professor said it... "Computer science is a double-misnomer." It's not only about computers (Think integrated circuits), and it's not one of the classical sciences (Math, physics, biology, chemistry, etc). It's a purely-semantic argument, but it's funny to think about.

My official org-chart title: "Associate / Analyst" My official job title: "Software Developer" My boss refers to me as a: "Technologist" (I initially thought he just made that word up), or a number of more important-sounding titles if he's talking to potential investors. I've been referred to as a CTO more than once. I consider myself a: "Geek" I tell people I'm a: Writer... Programming has become just a day job... I feel old. :(

Of course I didn't; it's a link posted by CSS. Just making sure anyone who did learned their lesson. :)

I've had lots of titles. Currently it's 'Development Team Leader'. I've only ever answered the question of "what do you do?" with "I'm a programmer"

I'm with you Josh. I don't hide behind a fancy title to have pride in what I do. I have a flashy title, but like you I simply say I'm a programmer when asked.
