Title: a typical theist statement. However, consider the situation in which a deity does something stupid. What is he/she/it thinking?

Well, being omniscient and such allows me to know exactly how to do this best. But you know what, I'm feeling particularly perverse today, so I'm intentionally going to screw this up.

Well guess what, that just doesn't make any sense.

Oh screw those vertebrates! Let's see how they'll handle an inside-out retina.

    Wut?

Haha! "Humans"! Such stupid creatures. Let's give their women periods, just for the heck of it.

Come on guys. edit: or maybe:

"Hm they are not quite finished yet." Thought God, creating Humans. "Ah I know just what they need! I'll give their females periods!"

(trying a different writing style there, is it better?)

Let's base the laws of physics on something that inherently does not make sense, just like myself! I shall name it: quantum mechanics.

Good fight. (this will be nice)

Quantum Physics is Easy. If you think you've got it, you haven't got it.

Hey, no problem. I was just wondering if I should go slam a couple of beers before trying to make sense of it. :-D

Some Christians will say God gave women periods as punishment for the apple thing. I do not remember that part of the Bible just the part of major pain during child birth.

Dunno, never met the woman. Going to guess that she wouldn't admit it anyway. It is said that God would be omniscient and omnipotent. If that's true she'd be evil, according to Epicurus :) Evil is a human concept, and from my point of view the devil might be evil. Doesn't mean that the devil is evil in God's perspective.

I don't know what "theists" you're talking to, but you're a bit off there. I've never met a theist who would say that God intentionally screwed something up. A more accurate response would be to say that what seems "stupid" to you is really the best way, you just can't understand it. As far as the inverted retina goes, I sent you one link showing why it's a better design, but here's another: The Inverted Retina: Maladaptation or Pre-adaptation?[^] Apparently, the vertebrate eye has an extremely high metabolic rate requiring copious amounts of blood. From the article: "The oxygen consumption of the mammalian retina (per gram of tissue) is nearly 50% greater than that of the kidney, three times greater than the cerebral cortex and six times that of cardiac muscle". The best way to provide that oxygen is to completely flood the retina with blood which would have to occur opposite the source. This would require the retina to be inverted. And, I'm sure you can find a reason why menstruation happens the way it does.

There are plenty of animals with a "normal" retina, and they are alive just fine. Vertebrates could have that kind of eye. Perhaps vertebrate eyes use a lot of oxygen because they can - that kind of thing certainly happens and how can anyone be sure what is the action and what the reaction?

Of course they'd say that, but that kind of reasoning is inherently flawed. Accepting something crazy because it doesn't have to make sense stops you from finding out the actual truth.

Anyway, supposing that some of the things I mentioned turn out to be good after all, that does not help at all. There are always other imperfections. The real battle is here is not over the tiny little things I mentioned, but over the crazy idea that man (or some other creature) is "perfect" and therefore ID happened.
