This is a strong jewish community, and that is part of the problem. It is seen also in muslim communities. There is a mental condition, Scrupulosity, that is part of the OCD range of conditions. It is concerned with a pathological, schizoassociative desire to conform to percieved moral or religious teachings. It then provides to the patient a mental framework in which it is rational to perform moralistic judgement and often tortuous punishment upon those that are seen as not being up to scratch with the dogmatic view of the sufferer. It is seen least in European/Christian Cultures (In USA, Australia, South America etc) which I believe show at about 4% of population, and peak in Semitic and Arabic Populations and in Jewish and Islamic cultures at about 70%. There are four levels of Scrupulosity, ranging from mild to extreme, but the fact that 70% of the population of Jews and Muslims suffer from it is quite frightening. There are many reasons, some are that the inherent racism and antithesis to other religions is taught from a young age, and as this is then affecting the mental health of the individual can be rightly seen as mental abuse. Also the fact that western culture spends less time with religious leaders and more time socialising with friends has a beneficial effect upon mental health. It is this condition that many see as an argument for banning Religion on health grounds.

"Scrupulosity"? I had to google that because it sounded like an very good DD wind up, but alas, it actually is as you describe. Wiki states 40-60% in jewish/muslim populations. Anyway, hopefully these numbers are falling since they are less likely to breed than the less scrupulous! Actually, makes me glad I am a pagan. I get to live my life by the slackest of mral standards that satisfy my conscience. Cant beat it!

(I find php kind of flat boards more convinient than this especially when I have to reply to all or add my own comments) All the desert religions basically harbor the same dogmatic sentiment. They (religions) have after all sprung from the culture. I am, in a way, glad that most Christians skip Old Testament or at least don't take it as literally as the New Testament when speaking of "back to olde ways". That said I feel the cultural differences between west Asia and Europe (hence new world), which is what vividly reminds of Christianity, has a major part to play.
