Cp's changing underneath without notice
-
From now on you can't send an article link to someone and say, "here is how the issue can be solved". Now you have to say "hey read the article, and if it looks interesting create an account, log and then grab the content". It's to me quite a change in the spirit of sharing at all. And amazingly enough I can't see any note about this from Cp admins in either the public forums, or even in the article publication wizard. In other words, authors have not been told about it. Besides that, when one takes the time to create an account, and then log, he probably is going to EXPECT MORE feedback about his coding issues, than he would expect without logging at all. That's only my point but I would like to take the living example of VCDJ. 4 years ago, VCDJ.com was an amazing free resource to learn about MFC internals and stuff (codeguru-like). Then, for any reason, it got bought by Devx.com. As soon as Devx.com came in, only the archive was available to one-time comers. After 6 months, even the archive required an account. Now, Devx is dead.

No, in fact Chris talked about this a fair bit in the lounge, it's to stop people from anonymously scraping the site and using up bandwidth without being part of things. It's to help the site not be abused, not for the site to abuse it's users. I think more of the site should only be for people with accounts, I also think accounts should be required to have a valid email. Fair enough. If that's how you feel, then why don't you go somewhere else ? You obviously were not paying attention when Chris took the time to tell us this, and last time I checked every thing I get out of this site is paid for by him and by his sponsors, so as far as I can see he has the right to do whatever the hell he pleases. I happen to believe that whatever model CP looks to take on, it will not be sprung on us or done with stealth. It's not just that Chris is a decent sort of guy ( although he is ), he is also not stupid. Regulars won't probably notice (since those cookie suckers are always logged, :omg: ) that it's now impossible to download a zip file from an article without being logged. Should I remind the Cp window title right above "The Code Project - Free Source Code and Tutorials". So yes, it's still dollar-free at the moment, but not totally free since you are bothered by the creation of a useless account, and bothered by a useless logon. Looks a bit stupid when you know that most people are one-time comers. May be Cp is looking ahead his own fate. An author's note.

I think it's quite nice. One day, when I'm older and wiser, and my article content has matured nicely, I would like to know how many people download them or if I'm wasting my time by not taking up creative writing lessons before posting :)

Chris announced it in the lounge and if I remember correctly asked for feedback on the decision. I think it's a good idea, any programmer worth his salt would have a CP Account anyway as it is one of the premium development resources on the web. Michael Life’s not a song. Life isn’t bliss. It comes to me that Cp is a public NG dev forum where people post here as well as in ten other sites, and return next day to get their answers. Now that I know users are required to log on, the word public is obsolete. What remains of it then ? I am quite unhappy at this point that Cp hasn't implemented anything of the .NET MS initiative, and is just like any other devsite. You probably know what I am talking about. Now that Cp is following other devsites fate, the only thing that will save Cp against death is to become a fully sponsored MS site. Sweat is not going to be enough at this point.

The only reason for it was to stop people from web ripping, thus sucking the bandwidth. According to me, it's an incredibly bad reason to force users to log on. Now send a Cp article link to one of your friends, and hear what they think of it...

Why didnt you respond when Chris posted his intentions in the lounge? .S.Rod. wrote: The only reason for it was to stop people from web ripping, thus sucking the bandwidth. According to me, it's an incredibly bad reason to force users to log on. Yeah. Not a good reason at all. After all why should the people who bother to sign up and contribute to the site get a nice responsive experience when browsing their favorite website? All that bandwidth should be reserved for the web-rippers... shouldn't it? BTW. Since you're complaining about the solution that was implemented, do you have an alternative solution to prevent web-rippers sucking bandwidth? Cheers

Lol - I did just that this morning when a friend in Durbs asked for help via MSN - she and another in her office have signed up already, wondering how they survived without it so far. At least I can't be blamed for not telling them before - it's amazing how people won't listen to good advice (iow. check out CP) until they are in crap and need quick answers.

Chris Maunder posted something in the Lounge in the last few days about it. As Chris stated it, it is intended the site ripper-type of folks from consuming the bandwidth allocated to code project. Apparently CP has gotten so popular that people are litterally downloading the whole site scarfing alot of bandwidth that should be available to the rest of us. Chris is just taking the least possible offensive measures from a business and available tech sense to try and preserve an environment we know and love. Mark
