Cp's changing underneath without notice

Chris Maunder posted something in the Lounge in the last few days about it. As Chris stated it, it is intended the site ripper-type of folks from consuming the bandwidth allocated to code project. Apparently CP has gotten so popular that people are litterally downloading the whole site scarfing alot of bandwidth that should be available to the rest of us. Chris is just taking the least possible offensive measures from a business and available tech sense to try and preserve an environment we know and love. Mark

(I really do not feel the need to be respectful in anyway at this point, so live with it) .S.Rod. wrote: The only reason for it was to stop people from web ripping, thus sucking the bandwidth. According to me, it's an incredibly bad reason to force users to log on. Look obviously you are God incarnate and have the mind of 50 of us, so please, Mr. Rod., please tell us how to stop scrapers? Any constructive criticism is appreciated. .S.Rod. wrote: Now send a Cp article link to one of your friends, and hear what they think of it... From now on you can't send an article link to someone and say, "here is how the issue can be solved". Now you have to say "hey read the article, and if it looks interesting create an account, log and then grab the content". It's to me quite a change in the spirit of sharing at all. And amazingly enough I can't see any note about this from Cp admins in either the public forums, or even in the article publication wizard. In other words, authors have not been told about it. Besides that, when one takes the time to create an account, and then log, he probably is going to EXPECT MORE feedback about his coding issues, than he would expect without logging at all. That's only my point but I would like to take the living example of VCDJ. 4 years ago, VCDJ.com was an amazing free resource to learn about MFC internals and stuff (codeguru-like). Then, for any reason, it got bought by Devx.com. As soon as Devx.com came in, only the archive was available to one-time comers. After 6 months, even the archive required an account. Now, Devx is dead.

He seems to think he can run this site better than Chris. Each time he speaks, he's being mean spirited.

Regulars won't probably notice (since those cookie suckers are always logged, :omg: ) that it's now impossible to download a zip file from an article without being logged. Should I remind the Cp window title right above "The Code Project - Free Source Code and Tutorials". So yes, it's still dollar-free at the moment, but not totally free since you are bothered by the creation of a useless account, and bothered by a useless logon. Looks a bit stupid when you know that most people are one-time comers. May be Cp is looking ahead his own fate. An author's note.

well you try running a site with soooooooooo many visitors, the bandwidth usage will be outrageous. .S.Rod. wrote: Regulars won't probably notice well those who are regulars, will probably have seen a post in which Chris said the bandwidth usage was too high, and he will have to stop downlaods for non-members. I'm trying to be more like John Simmons. Eventually, I want to change my name on CP to: Jason Henderson / American Bada$$
