Long post: Your local government

well, not yours probably, but it could well be they are all pretty much the same. This post: http://www.codeproject.com/Messages/3621258/Re-fire-fighting-fees.aspx[^] prompted mine. Way back in the days of y2k, I was working as an IT technician for a Social Services department. I was sent to set up the IT needed for a "conference" held by the deputy director of the department. The aim was ostensibly good: Teenagers in the care homes were given the opportunity to give presentations to local councillors about life in the homes. This gave the wee'uns a chance to feel important and help build their confidence, and it should have raised the profile of the homes whilst reinforcing the fact that real children, rather than statistics, live there and the problems / successes they find. So far so noble. Enter the councillors. Given the opportunity to spend time with the children or the councillors, any sane would have chosen the kids. The councillors were constantly demanding (really like three year olds). They were all used to the council workers kow-towing and getting their own way like spoiled brats, the behaved like this with the kids too. Meanwhile the children were very well behaved but in fairness the homes hadn't sent the more difficult ones. Then, what I assumed was a only bag lady came in. She could only communicate in a series of grunts (honestly!), but it turns out she was an old hand in the local oligarchy and had been a councillor for years. The conference went on, the councillors looked bored throughout, eventually it finished. As the conference ended I left with the deputy director, I noticed a huge table of food (easily enough for the whole group) layed out. I said "At least the kids will get a decent spread out of it". All I got was an incredulous and saddened look along with the answer "no they won't, they've got a packed lunch from the homes, this is for the councillors". My last and abiding memory is that of Cllr. Grunt stuffing her face with pork pie, getting there was probably the only time she moved quickly in years.
Yea sorry, I got a bit off-topic there. Your experience with the councilors [firefox tells me it's with 1 L?] does not surprise me.. But how about this, our local government "has ties with" real estate mobsters (real estate mobsters are in the local government) I'm sure it's handy, clearing those pesky land use plans out of the way. It's common knowledge, but no one does anything about it. Not much anyway. For some reason unknown to me, they got 5 seats too many(more than zero) at this years elections (down from 7 previously). Can you beat that? :)

I got involved in politics a few years back and hated every minute of it: I pulled out and didn't pursue it.
