It seems everybody in the late 90's, and early this century decided to become a web developer when they left education. Because it was the trendy thing to do. And let's face it, making web pages is fun! As Chris said, you get to work on graphics and design, html, and a variety of scripting technologies. If you run the server yourself, you get intimate knowledge of server administration. Unfortunately, most people think that because they understand what the <h1> tag does, they are a top web designer. I remember one guy in college who, after two years of being learnt visual basic, couldn't actually attach some code to a button. Yet he made a html page with a pink background and large green, flashing text, and decided to do a degree in web design. I decided not to tell him how much programming would be involved. Muahaha!

Not to say all people who use a browser as the presentation layer are idiots ( I'm one of them ), but a lot of people seem to have got into web dev in the 90's because they owned Frontpage....
