Once again, "According to whether you are powerful or destitute, so will the judgement of the court render you black or white" Here's an article of the Guardian[^] explaing the case

He compared the French centre-right government to the Vichy regime that collaborated with France's German occupiers during the second world war, The last place I worked at there was a french guy. Someone once mentioned the Vichy and the look that crossed his face was sheer agony. I suspect that relatives of his had been killed by them. This José Bové has made one of the ultimate cheap shots that I can think of  Would you like to meet my teddy bear ?

José Bové said that the last syndicalist put in jail because of his syndicalist action was imprisoned by the Vichy regim. This is slightly different. Karl, this is the sentence below, and it still looks like he is making the comparison from what I can see. He compared the French centre-right government to the Vichy regime that collaborated with France's German occupiers during the second world war, saying that if trade unionists like him were imprisoned, "it spells the end of union action, citizens' initiatives and resistance to the established order". Sounds as though Mr. Bove wants it both ways. Civil disobedience to press his cause without suffering the consequences. Makes the civil disobedience rather pointless. Mike

Do you think it's the same sentence below ? José Bové said that the last syndicalist put in jail because of his syndicalist action was imprisoned by the Vichy regim [also] saying that if trade unionists like him were imprisoned, "it spells the end of union action, citizens' initiatives and resistance to the established order". Frankly, it's IMO not the same. The first one may be summed up as "the government is fascist and we have to fight against him", the second one as "Our freedoms are threatened, remember the past and move our ass". Moreover, he uses expressions which are perhaps more significant in the french context. For example, using Vichy and Resistance in the same declaration is not innocent. The word citizen is important, because it remembers the concept of Nation and the values of 1789 (Declaration of rights). Remembering also that Vichy was the revenge of the right and far-right wings of the french political class over the previous left-winged government (the "Front Populaire" which had the power from 1936 to 1938) is an historical fact, as the arrest of a syndicalist for his action, it never happened since 1945. The right-wing farmers syndicate made protests much more destructive as the ones made by Bové. They have wrecked minitry's offices, destroyed a factory (cost: 10 millions €, payed by the State) and so on, without being even trialed.

Thanks. Looks like he not only talks the talk but is willing to walk the walk. Raises my respect level although I don't agree with his causes and generally mistrust those who make protest a way of life. That does is not meant to be critical, if the causes (and it looks like they are) are all tied to a core belief then I've got to give him credit for living his beliefs. Mike

I bet they will stay free as ("unfueled") birds. I can't understand when someone destroys a field that belongs to a company, he's a criminal and when a big company destroys or damages the environment (that belong to everybody) it's called progress... I don't agree with Bovè's methods, but I agree with his ideas and I think that the actions performed by his group have only demonstrative pourpouses and do a very small damage to the owners of the properties involved. When they dismount a McDonald's (with no violence and requiring only the reassembly of the parts they removed) on many newspapers the fact has been reported as an "assault" to the restaurant or the "distruction" of a McDonald's. -- Looking for a new screen-saver?
