Given that Arizona allows people to carry concealed weapons in public why did no one shoot Jared Lee Loughner?

- Just because people CAN carry weapons doesn't mean that those particular people WERE carrying weapons. This was a political meet-and-greet with a democratic candidate, so I would think that makes it slightly less likely (As opposed to a conservative candidate) that many people were armed. 2) According to the news reports, the whole thing happened in the space of about 15 seconds... He left the line, ran forward, drew his gun, and started shooting. There wasn't much time for people to react... Once his first mag ran dry and his second one jammed (Luckily), people took him down.

You're confusing a lack of proof with a disproof. The argument may or may not be valid. This incident neither proves nor disproves it. We don't know how many, if any, of the people were armed, or how close the armed people were to the actual incident. Honestly, I'm undecided on gun laws, so I favor the status quo... Let each state and city decide as they see fit.

They are saying that political candidates will start to carry arms. So that begs the question, if Gifford and the people around her were armed, would the shooting be avoided?

More likely there would be collateral damage and 15 dead instead of 6

There is a big difference between owning/carrying the weapon and pointing at another human being and pulling the trigger.

I doubt it. The guy ran at her while she wasnt looking, what advantage would a pistol in her handbag give her? To think that the correct response to something like this is to arm politicians is about the silliest thing I've heard in a while

A candidate shoot out would be cheaper than an election. Soon learn who is backed by the "military-industrial complex".

If it's on your hip, you're the only one who's going to get shot... In all seriousness, I agree. Which is why I'm glad we can't carry weapons as such where I live.

Oh... I've only seen one handgun in my life (apart from police officers). I was just thinking of every Hollywood action movie I've ever seen. Although I have seen Lightning Jack (IIRC that was a Western where a mute bloke shot himself in the foot trying to remove the revolver from its holster), so you must be right

I'm glad for you - I wouldn't trust myself with a gun, let alone any of the drongoes that hang around the place.

IMO I think CSS has a point. Not everyone is cutout to be a Dirty Harry.
