Just found out that the office is being reorganised again, so I'll be moving desk for the sixth time (at least - I've lost count) within the last 2 years of working here. What are the odds of getting somewhere where the whole room can't see my monitor this time? -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!
Jump in first - it is worth decapitating and maiming a couple of the weaker, unfriendlier colleagues to get a prime corner position ;P Oh - and good luck (with the office move and the possible trip to the police station afterwards)

Won't work - I'm the most junior person in our 3 man team, (despite being with the company the 2nd longest - go figure) so I doubt I'll get much chance :| I think I know where we're being moved to and there are 2 really nice desks tucked into the corner, and one in full view of the door when someone walks into the room... -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!

Actually it looks like I haven't come off too badly - someone just came round with a room plan and gave me a choice of 2 desks, so I picked one next to the window (mmm - natural light) that's facing into the room. Looks like it should be ok... -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!

I worked for a company in the past that liked to do the "office shuffle" (Silicon Graphics). They had 10+ buildings on their campus and they were constantly moving people's offices from one place to another. Talk about a productivity killer! They shuffled so often that they had a moving company contracted full time just to move people's computers/offices around! It was hilarious to see some of the things that middle-management does to appear productive. They would divide groups into subgroups for a year or two, only to re-combine them later. They were constantly moving groups and people around to different buildings, even though they were only a hundred meters away (or less)! There's a Dilbert cartoon in which his boss moves him to the opposite side of the building just to be near his group, even though his office is located where his project team is. Dilbert complies, and makes a comment that he feels like he's just a pawn in a big management chess game. I've worked in so many places that routinely move people for no apparent reason that I've tentatively formed two opinions. They either have too few desks for the number of employees they have, and so have to keep x% of them in motion lest someone realize it. Or my group has consistently outproduced everyone else, making them look bad, so we were required to disrupt our productive routine on a regularly basis to slow us down. As for the desk position, there is a desk language every bit as effective as body language. At one place they put my group in a long hall with all the desks lined up facing the walls. Being a very junior engineer, I was stuck clear back at the end, far from the door. So I rotated my desk out to face the door (there was no rule about desk orientation). As a result, when someone entered our little den of productivity they immediately saw my face at the far end, apparently supervising the rest. It was naturally assumed that I was the group leader, and I quickly became so in fact!:-D Perceptions are everything! I think it'd just get me a P45 more than a better desk (though thankfully my new desk is in a great spot!!) I'm intrigued though as to what you were displaying, or am I better off not knowing? -- Help me! I'm turning into a grapefruit!

No one ever commented on it, but anytime there was a question about our work, or an important memo intended for one of us, it came to my desk. Gradually my phone extension was passed around as the contact number for us, and when new contracts came up for discussion it was my phone that rang to ask for "someone" to represent us.
