Nope its Not like this.. See consider 1000 people live in India and more than 500+ people dont want him to be elected. The State of Gujrat has 100 people living and 75+ people want to him elected..So he gets elected and rules the state..But Across the country people know he tarnished the image of India and so they hate him but in his state peole elected him becos of Communal polarization...So u see my point. He came to power becos of Democracy loopholes.. cheers, Super ------------------------------------------ Too much of good is bad,mix some evil in it

Well Everyone says Democracy is the Best Form of government but is it true in all cases.. Recently we had a state election in Gujrat..Well the majority of people in India were against Mr Modi(Hindu Fundamentalist who fuelled communal tension in the state of Gujrat). But to the Surprise of Everyone He was re-elected with 2/3 majority(Election was Fair and free).:mad: Many people are shocked and believe more communal clash may start. But Indian Consitution says that Govt elected by people cannot be declared "Null and Void" IS there any way these people can be prevented from taking office.....:(( cheers, Super ------------------------------------------ Too much of good is bad,mix some evil in it

super, I don't quite understand your example, but I can show you other examples where the minority win above the majority. lets say you have 100,000 voters, and 100 candidates for 10 councilors positions -> then the average candidate will get 1000 votes And its possible to get all 10 councilors elected mathematically with slightly more than 10% of all the votes. So almost 90% of the voters wanted somebody else. ( ok I have seen this happen in Brasil ) The way around this is to have preferential voting where you can give each candidate a number in preference eg 1 to 100 in the above case. This makes voting complicated and counting votes near impossible. (which is where electronic elections would be good) Democracy does suck, but if we work at it we can make it suck less. There are countless solutions to making democracy better unfortunately the folks in power would be disadvantaged and therefore won't implement changes. To me this is an inherent flaw of democracy, that is paralleled by how communists behave. Regardz Colin J Davies

Java is a great idea, but just try implementing it and see the mess that comes out. My point being that us fallible humans have implemented the idea of democracy and have, well, not implemented it all that well. We have functional specifications for democracy but how many times do we actually refer to it and if you compare the spec with the product, well they differ don't they? Still, as Michael P Butler A. Barnhart keeps saying, write to your ministers/senators/hob-knobs. Complain, make yourself heard, join a march, do something. Don't just bitch to us international CPians.

I'm not sure you've described anything wrong with the system. Assuming there are not major restrictions on who may vote, it sounds like the majority has spoken. Is it possible that this candidates opposition might just be more vocal than his support, so it only seems the majority is against him? I know part of the problem here the US, is that the population doesn't educate itself enough, and so often just votes for the name they recognize(ie. whoever is currently in office). What is the Hindu Fundementalist stand? What are they doing wrong? Was the opposition a valid choice to help make positive changes? Mr. Modi is not ruling all of India. In my state we have a corrupt governor. He doesn't rule the entire country therefore no one else in the country gives a rats butt. super wrote: IS there any way these people can be prevented from taking office..... Knowing that Churchill was the instigator of the bloody failure of the Dardanelles expedition[^] during WW(part 1), I can affirm he wasn't always right :)

One small village of indomitable geeks still holds out against the invaders. And life is not easy for the managers legionaries who garrison the fortified camps of Microsoftum, Javum, Ceplumplum and Vebasum

Democracy: a government of the people chosen by the people... More people voted for the third series of Big Brother in the United Kingdom than people voted during the 2001 national elections...
