It was a 'Young Explorers' expedition, the science is to provide 'educational' content. In the wilds, the science project is always going to be something 'environmental'. Why not monitoring 'climate change'?

What annoys me about is that the polar bear got shot for just doing what it is supposed to do when someone invaded its territory. Although I was surprised to see no-one claiming it must have been a Muslim polar bear. One of the kids had an operation to remove the bear's teeth from his skull a day or two ago.

Oh, yeah, so, if a bear was cracking your skull open and mauling you, you'd be lying there, screaming "don't kill it, it's just doing what it is supposed to!" would you?

I take it you think people should be prosecuted for defending their homes against burglars and intruders then?

"The anticipated outcomes are based around the following nine virtues: Leadership Team Working Communication Group Management Risk Awareness & Management Organisation, Motivation & Discipline Fundraising Project Management Feedback Expedition Skills" That is what is being 'sold' to the schools. Remove the 'Fundraising' aspect, and it's the same sort of waffle that Management Consultants and the Armed Forces peddle. (Although the latter may very well require Fundraising Project Management very soon.) "General themes are centred around climate change, biodiversity, and human interaction with the environment." Why omit the last two? They're 'Enviro'ist, and contribute to Climate Change studies.

... the official enquiry (aka Daily Mail comments) reported yesterday.

Why? Because to imitate, in the best tradition, a fat_boy post, one has to trim out the unnecessary details. :)

Well, that is the most massive leap in assumptive deduction I have ever experienced. To answer your question, I believe that the use of reasonable force in defending yourself or your property is appropriate. If someone tries to break into your home, while you are in, and you hit them sufficiently to stop them being any danger to you, then that's fine in my book. If you continue to hit them much beyond that point, well, it really does depend on the circumstances - I can see that some people might just lose it and go further than they meant to - but what is the alternative? turn a blind eye? Under exactly what circumstances? Who would make the decision as to whether to turn a blind eye unless the case is prosecuted? I cold invite you to my home, beat you into a bloody mess, then deny having invited you. My address is.. (joking!)

If you don't want to get eaten by lions don't climb into the lion cage. But if you do then don't blame the lion, it aint his fault.

This was a 'Young Explorers' expedition - climbing mountains, traversing glaciers, enduring snowstorms, making and striking camp, all that sort of 'Scouting for Boys' stuff. But there has to be some sort of 'scientific' project - can't all be fun and games. Given that they're stuck in the wilds, the project is always going to be some form of environmental study.

Who's blaming the lion (Polar Bear?) The issue was killing the polar bar - and it was not shot in retribution it was shot in self defense.

Very funny, but I'm not biting. :-D BTW: I once had a copy of the 'Little Red Book'. It was thrust into my hands by a RC priest, who assured me that it would answer any problems I might have in life. I thought it was some religious tract, so it was only when I came to throw it away ...

Whats the difference? It's undergone a number of name changes, GW, to CC, to I foget the latest incarnation, but its the same beast, no matter what it is called.

But this polar bear wasn't euthanized, was it? It was shot by the people rescuing their friends. Different water-boiler of pisceans, my friend.

The bear still lost its life because of the actions of the humans rather than through any fault of its own. Whatever their reasons for delivering the kill are irrelevant.

Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends.
