From the Guardian: Drug firms 'invented' female sexual problem [^]

the reason for this is very simple: to patent a drug, you need to be able to say it has a specific effect. Eli Lily had a patnet on Prozac, for example, to perform a specific function related to specific mood disorders. but, that patent was to expire in 2004. so, Eli Lily and a couple of guys at MIT found a new use for the drug: PMS. now, they have brand new patent on the exact same drug; but now it's called Sarafem and it's pink and purple, not yellow and green. in 1999, the big 5 drug companies spent more than 2x on sales/marketing as they did on R&D. and, one big way to sell something is to convince people they need it - even if they don't. (PDAs, multi-vitamins, new cars, new diseases) -c
I'm not the droid you're looking for.
Chris you make very good points. But, I would like to defend the use of multi-vitamins. They are not a complete waste. True, if the average person ate a healthy diet they would not need one, but most people I know never get two servings a vegetables a day, much less care about their diet. That's the way society trained them to be. In fact, a lot of people don't even like vegetables. For instance, Biotin is mainly found in green vegetables. It's an essential nutrient required by the body. How many people do you know that eat a green vegetable every day? I mean sure, you won't absorb as much from a pill, but you can eat it with food to help absorb more and at least something is better than nothing. Just my two cents. I wouldn’t feel right about myself without adding it. :) Jeremy Falcon Imputek Excrement escapes everyone - even elders.

I know you must be but I have to ask out of disbelief - are you serious?! There are people out there in countries where finding food is not a problem who don't eat a blanced mixed diet?! If I was in a third world village slowly starving because my crop failed I'd be mighty pissed off at the cheek of such guys right about now. I mean come on people, there is *no* excuse for us not to eat good portions of meat, vegetables and dairy products each and every day. Jeremy Falcon wrote: How many people do you know that eat a green vegetable every day? Well not to dampen your argument, but *everyone* I know personally. Maybe it's because I live an a relatively rural town and not a big city with McD's and Starbucks on every corner, I don't know, but I can't believe the sheer cheek of some people, I really can't. :omg: I'm sorry, but I still need to add a few more :omg: :wtf: :omg: :wtf: :omg: :wtf: and  :(( :(( :((!!

Yes, there is -- it would be REALLY boring! :-D I'm sorry, but I do like pizza or a KFC at least once a week, seriously lacking in green veg. Then there's my addiction to pasta and rice. And then there's the odd "snacky" day where you eat sandwiches and such all day long and find you don't want an evening meal. I mean, I'm all for moderating this and trying to keep things balanced, but meat and two veg every day would make me want to throw after a week of it. I'd much rather buy a jar of multi-vit ;P Paul Pleasently caving in, I come undone - Queens of the Stone Age, No One Knows

"there is increasing concern that women will be prescribed drugs for sexual problems that in reality stem from emotional difficulties in their relationship." Umm.. isn't this true for a wide variety of ailments? Don't people get prescriptions like Prozak, Ridlin, Zyban, etc.... for all kinds of things that can probably be overcome with a little self-discipline, creativity, and time. Seems to me the first course of action these days is a pill. NOt saying there aren't valid uses for these medicines, BTW. I didn't realize these drug companies were actively involved in "promoting" new disease definitions. No conflict of interest there. :~ BW "Gandalf. Yes. That is what they used to call me. Well okay, sure, even I have the odd day or two each month where I'll have a McD's for lunch out of the sheer convienience of not having to prepare something myself or else just for a bit of change once in a while, but I still manage to eat my balanced diet too, and I rarely miss my apple or an orange for afters (an apple does wonders for cleaning the bits of food from your mouth). I honestly don't think there has been a single day that I have not eaten at least *some* fruit and vegatables. I could survive without dairy and I could survive without meat, but I couldn't get through a week without my salads and fresh fruit. I could live without dairy EXCEPT for cheese - I love cheese, have it on everything. I couldn't survive without meat at all; I had trouble with two weeks in Turkey where all meat seems to come in small chunks while I do like a hunk of meat to cut into. I'd have no trouble living without salad, except in cheese sandwiches :-D. I do love fresh fruit which does help in the balancing of dietry habits. There is a clear distinction between a psychiatrist (real doctor who can prescribe drugs if req'd) and a psychologist (not). Mike Mullikin
