    My main gripe about Fords is that although they make fairly good engines, the gearboxes are not up to scratch. They are reliable enough but seem somehow under geared. Mind you, I am spoilt a bit, I have a history of Jaguars, MR2's and Opel Senators, so I kind of base automotive opinion on the upper range of the genre.

      MR2 and Jags too? Cheap Japanese sports car and the UKs favorite criminal gang car! Quality? He needs to drive a BMW if he wants a measure of what quality is. (OK, BMWs are totally souless and I hate driving them, but they are very well made)

        Thats time for a new head. Runing a shim, two head gaskets and all that, its just waiting to fall apart. Either that or get the rotary dril attachment out and port the head. :) One of the big risks with extreme head skims is valves and pistons making contat. Add hairy cams into the mix and it gets worse.

Either that or get the rotary dril attachment out and port the head. :) One of the big risks with extreme head skims is valves and pistons making contat. Add hairy cams into the mix and it gets worse.

          Yeah, I have a spare head on the floor of the shed, but after spending so much money on this one, I'm keen to keep using it if it doesn't break...

            Yeah, I have a spare head on the floor of the shed, but after spending so much money on this one, I'm keen to keep using it if it doesn't break...

            If the head is alluminimum, and it ought to be these days, you can increase the combustion chamber size to reduce the compression. You can take the opportunity to improve its shape and flow characteristics too in order to get better performance. It is a bit of messing around, but could be fun to do. :)

                  First On Race Day I've heard 'em all. I have 102k miles on the car (7.5 years old), and this is only the 2nd time it's cost me money for service. It doesn't rattle or squeak, the paint is still good on it, and I'm even still on the original brakes. I'd say that's a pretty good return on investment, and it's been paid off for three years, so go ahead and joke about it. My next car will be a Ford, too.

                    No, it's a cast iron head... The car is 47 years old, the engine about 40 years old... The issue prior to the shim was the rebuild caused too much compression - just couldn't keep the fuel octane high enough to stop detonation...

                        OK, thats a really old engine. Did you think of skimming the tops of the pistons down a bit? Mind you, if it is that old, then running with a shim and two head gaskets probably wont be a problem since it isnt going to be giving and kind of real performance.

                        It's got 60thou oversized flat top pistons... the block has been decked and everything rebuilt - it's all new. The issue seems to purely be that the head has been shaved so many times that it's increased the compression... it had 210psi across the board... crazy big compression!! After putting in the 3mm shim (only one head gasket - the other side goes straight on the block) it dropped the compression by 40psi... It's all documented on the Booger Mobile blog if you want to see the story with lovely colour pictures...

                            I've had Fords most of my life and had mostly good experiences from them. My current truck; 98 Ranger 3.0L 4X4 has 142K on it and I've had to put some money in it but overall (know on wood) it's been a good'un. Interestingly the only Chevy I had was an OLD station wagon back in 72 with 3 speed on the column. There was a problem where the linkage would occasionally stick and I would have to lift the hood and fart with the linkage until it unstuck. I should have took it as a sign but on my way to the church to get married it stuck, then when I got there I said "I do" and subsequently I got stuck.
