I got pissed off at Acronis because it failed to allow me to clone my primary drive so I downloaded EaseUS[^] and it worked like a charm. Haven't tried to do backup yet but if it's as easy as the clone I'd say it'd be a good tool to add to your box.

Acronis recently pissed me off when it failed to open an archive made with an earlier version...

Yeah I don't know where there heads at, they used to be good but with each new version it seems to progressively be getting worse. Although some of the newer features is the reason I keep upgrading.

They've also turned into licensing nazis... Something else to piss me off about... Never understood why people would give a hard time about installing the product on multiple machines if I've already paid for it. They actually told me I wasn't allowed to install the product on an external drive to clone multiple computers (to back them up).

Just loaded it today, and am trying the backup (since the backup software I normally use only installs with my old NAS - now bricked for the last time ) Only complaint (other than trivia vie labels that disappear under the textbox they are related to) is the progress indicator. Full backup, first time, estimated time remaining 3m 22s. Half an hour later, still 3m 22s, but the progress bar is up to 1/4. We shall see! [edit] After 45 minutes it updated the time remaining to 1hr 58m and it is counting down. [/edit]

Am interested in how the backup goes, am and will probably continue using Acronis for that. It's saved my butt a couple of times so I trust it.

I'm not totally useless, I can be used as a bad example.

Frankly? Not that impressed so far. The backup I asked for yesterday was only ~40Gb, so I would expect an hour, maybe two (in this case it is going to a USB2 external drive, so data transfer rates shouldn't be a problem, even if they would be slower than my Gigabit LAN / NAS combination was). When the Time remaining hit 12 hours after 4 hours work (and that slugging the whole PC out) it got killed, and I am re-trying with a smaller dataset - 500Mb. The PC doesn't seem as slugged , but the time is still on the "bad" side of useful: 5 mins elapsed, and still 2 mins to go. Allegedly. I suspect this one is a case of "you get what you pay for". Ok - 8 mins for 500 Mb, compressed to 385Mb. Some nice bits - you can enter the backup from Explorer, and have a good rummage around - you don't need to learn a new interface for restoring a single file, just grab and drop.

I used Acronis True Image 2010 for several years, then tried to upgrade to 2011 and found out that backing up to network mapped drives didn't work. Never could get it to work, so I skipped it. Bought 2012 4 weeks ago, still can't get it work properly, spent hours on chat with their support. Asked for a refund, get more responses that they want to make it work. The product is a no-go. Don't waste your time or money on the 2012 version unless you're doing simple local drive backups. Yeah that was my thinking also. I upgrades to 2011 about 3 months ago and wished I would have saved my money now.

Don't argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference.
