A white man makes his face black and gives out candy, and that's racism now? No. Piss off. "Racism is the belief that inherent different traits in human racial groups justify discrimination." (wikipedia, therefore true). Zwarte Piet is not discriminated against. Therefore not racism. Go whinge about real racism, whingers. itt: everyone disagrees

I think the definition of racism is more along the lines of: "Racism is the belief in the inherent superiority of one race over another." Whether it justifies discrimination is somewhat of an extrapolation that shouldn't be part of the definition.

The difficult we do right away... ...the impossible takes slightly longer.

That's even better, Zwarte Piet definitely isn't racist then.

Wikipedia also nails one of the 'issues' with it.

Foreign tourists, particularly Americans, often experience culture shock upon encountering the character (to dress in blackface is a gross taboo in America).

As blackface's use has largely been racist as all hell in the US, can't speak for the rest of the world but I doubt it was much better. But hey, freak out some American tourists, not really going to hurt anything. Just some tourist minister or such wigging out over something other countries honestly won't understand. That said, I'd be real interested in knowing exactly what the difference between this and typical blackface is, other than it being tradition and all.

Well Zwarte Piet isn't really a stereotyped caricature of a black person, except perhaps in appearance.

Wait until christmas, then they will probably also have a problem with one of the three kings being depicted as an African.

And from the clouds a mighty voice spoke:
"Smile and be happy, for it could come worse!"

And I smiled and was happy
            And it came worse.

An African American surely, possibly names Doowopshoowopdewop or some other random collection of letters.

I’ve always thought for the racism as a personal preferences went too far. Allowing your personal preferences to influence you judgment/decisions is a racism, just having personal preferences is not. A Political Correctness went too far is also a racism because it puts the focus firmly on the racial or other differences and rises issues where they don’t exists. For example banning Mark Twain from the schools. So calling some local custom/festival “racism” is racialist itself.

I agree, but unfortunately not enough people (at least not those in power) do, so this madness continues..
