Putting the Soapbox back to it's use

Noticed too, that idle talk lately took over the soapbox, and the "war on war on terrorism" fairly regulary takes place in the lounge? Restricting rants to ranting zones obviously doesn't work. So, just a thought: Is cyanide gas worse than a cluster bomb? Is a barrel of anthrax worse than a thermobaric bomb? Is mustard gas worse than depleted uranium ammunition? oh, and Who Gassed The Kurds[^]?
Those who not hear the music think the dancers are mad. [sighist] [Agile]

everybody's used to explosives, bullets and WWI-era gases. people are only outraged at the new weapons - as if the old ones have stopped working. a man could walk into a crowded subway and kill as many people with a pair of Mac-10's as he could with a can of sarin. and dead is dead. -c

It depends on whether you prefer instant gratification, or would rather savor the lingering effects of your particular weapon. As Chris pointed out, a pair of Mac-10s is every bit as effective as a can of sarin gas, but it really appeals more to the instant gratification crowd. The sarin lets you bask in the glory of your victory over unarmed, defenseless opponents for a longer time... Personally, I prefer weapons that are more easily trained on my intended targets, as opposed to those which attack indiscriminately anyone who happens to wander into the kill zone. Collateral damage can make for some really bad press, and we all want to look our best for the CNN cameras. Cape Town, South AfricaAnd the publicity is better using sarin. In the same way we get news of a minor plane crash when only a couple of people die, but nothing about deaths in car accidents, because they are too common, unless, of course, it is a quiet day for news!

Cape Town, South Africaprobably easier to get a pair of mac10's than a can of sarin, too. it's a novelty thing. people thought the machine gun would be the end of war, since it made killing so absurdly easy. instead, armies developed the technique of not walking towards the other army in a straight line. -c
