Shog9 wrote: large ham? Unsure here, to me Ham has already been "cured" normally by giving a salt bath, so the meat doesn't need cooking as such, rather heating and moisturizing. Maybe Americun ham is different.? To get an evenness of heating small cavities made by skewers help. Also citrus juices and pinapple will soften the meat. (be careful how much you use) You can also wash the meat well to get rid of a large percentage of the salt taste before heating. Regardz Colin J Davies

You are the intrepid one, always willing to leap into the fray! A serious character flaw, I might add, but entertaining. Said by Roger Wright about me.

Right, now that i've got your attention (thanks super), does anyone have a favorite method of cooking a large ham? I know sticking it in a huge pan in the oven for a bit will do, but i'm looking for any little tips that will provide a quick and easy improvement to this process. Ideas?

Smoke it. No, no, no. That's not what I mean. Wrap it in foil and stick it on a grill for a few hours. Once you get the coals nice and hot, you don't have to do anything but wait. Use indirect hear - don't put it right over the coals. The coals on one side of the grill and the ham on the other. Don't use charcoal either. Try to find some mesquite if you can. Tons of that in Texas, so not a problem for me. Hickory works good too, but mesquite is hard to beat. If you can't find any, you can usually find a small bag of wood at the store in the aisle with the charcoal. It works ok but the flavor isn't as intense to me. Works good for brisket, ribs, turkey, quail, chicken, ... too. You can use this time to make the rest of the meal - potatos (mashed, potato salad or whatever you like), baked beans, bread, and most importantly, desert. Chocolate of course. Greg

I think several people felt they got the chance to vote on the 'rape ' post twice, or like so many before them, did not check the content before judging it. I wonder how many people who think Ozzy is of the devil realise that 'suicide solution' is a song about alcohol addiction, for example. Again, you can screw up a C/C++ program just as easily as a VB program. OK, maybe not as easily, but it's certainly doable. - Jamie Nordmeyer - 15-Nov-2002 -

I'm one of these, except I read the content, but thought the joke really sucks :((. I was badly surprized, 'cause generally I enjoy reading Mr Shog, who's IMHO loosing time in the computer industry with such a brilliant talent for writing :)

I was asleep or away during super's original post in The Lounge, and while i can't say i thought that quote/joke was funny, i was shocked by the number of replies it spawned. Especially certain ones posted from high up on a white horse asserting rape to be worse than murder, and thus far less deserving of inclusion in jokes of poor taste.
Obviously a sensitive topic.
So, given the somewhat more tolerant nature of The Soapbox, and my need for ham preparation tips, the choice was obvious. And yes, i do think rape is a crime.

I think you're taking my response totally wrong. It was never meant to be a slap on the hand but instead a pissy rant. There are few things in this world that make my blood boil, but rape is one of them. I apologize if I seemed to talk down to people making such jokes, it wasn't meant that way. Brad Jennings Okay, maybe I can be a little overbearing at times but at least I admit it and can laugh about it. Death rode a white horse too.
