5 ways Microsoft's Surface may be better than an iPad[^]

(CNN) -- It's sacrilege to some Apple fanboys. It's also something none of Apple's competitors have been able to claim since that "magical" day in early 2010. But when Microsoft unveiled the Surface tablet (actually a pair of them) Monday, the software company clearly had one ultimate goal: to make a tablet that's better than the iPad. By most standards, Apple has crushed its tablet rivals that have tried to compete feature-for-feature. No single tablet running Google's Android system has gotten much traction (save the smaller, cheaper Kindle Fire from Amazon) and BlackBerry maker RIM's Playbook hit the market with a thud.

To win - simply remove the restrictions imposed by apple - and I will buy!. The iPad is a nice piece of hardware and overall good software design, let down by its appalling lock down and lack of connectivity (no USB to PC etc). Hence by preference for Android Microsft was good for the PC as it was open (save for the actual operating system) do that for the surface and you stand a good chance of being an iPad killer - and we need one so badly

I would buy one, no questions asked, if i had the chance, i thinks it's not the prettiest of the pack, but it's features (at least the ones they have showed), have impressed me deeeply. Aside from that i believe Microsoft have made incredible hardware before (Zune HD, Xbox, Kinect, for example) and that's enough for me. P.S.: Apple has done beautiful increbible hardware too, but they're overpriced, that's why i'm not buying from them.

The keyboard in fact is a good idea. But it's awful. The most hideous tablet I ever saw. For the creative ones it think it's not alternative. The size otherwise is not good for me. 16:9 in computer monitores is crap. I, as a user of Indesign, Premiere and Visual Studio, like to have many tools on my screen. 16:9 for the remaining movie frame isn't possible, when you place toolbars there. I think a pad is for demonstrating. You have to use office products and pages aren't 16:9. So CNN is wrong for me. The processor otherwise is good. I hope other manufactorers of pads will move on to more powerful machines, too. And if cause the missing USB-port is one matter that I don't have an apple. As a user of a Lenovo netbook there are some good attributes, because I can't relinquish a keyboard. The new surface pad isn't ready for me yet. I would't buy something so ugly neither touch it. :-D But if they spend a new design I could think about buying a surface.

My wife thinks it's gorgeous and cannot wait to get one. And she uses an iPad, a Macbook Air and an iPhone. She's also Japanese and if you've ever been to Japan, you would know that they value beautiful things. So beauty really is in the eye of the beholder, and honestly, I think my wife sees clearly. But that might be my bias speaking.

BTW, the notebook I'm typing this on has a 16:9 ratio screen (1920 x 1080) and I write code on it all the time. P.S. Sorry for the multiple edits, I moved the wrong quote the first time.

Inappropriate for a programming forum. You need to supply the numbers in a better format. Here you go: for (int i=1; i<=45; ++i) { Console.WriteLine(i.ToString()+Environment.NewLine); } -CB ;-)

Tablets have been more like "consumer electronics" than "computer". Surface could be the one that fills the gap.

I think you've nailed it. Apple products are fancy gizmos for people who don't need real computers. This could be a real computer.

That's ok. I see it different. For me beauty is important. I don't like ugly people. For humans beauty comes from inside (and so does ugliness) for machines and objects beauty comes from the outside. In fact all my decisions on buying or doing something depends on the fact if I like it or not. Therefore I'm always happy cause I gather beauty around me. If you will see me on the street I'll smile, you can ask anybody who knows me. I'm never bad-tempered- I can't be because I know prettiness is everywhere around me. So for me: No Surface. It's ugly. And ugliness brings fretfulness. :-D
