I understand what you are talking about. There was a period of my life where I went through a similar process. Still, I look at people in the corporate world running around thinking that they actually matter and are irreplaceable and I laugh. Life is too short to waste, and we don't really get a second try at it. I believe a lot of people would like to "chuck in the corporate towel" but they don't for a variety of reasons. You are the intrepid one, always willing to leap into the fray! A serious character flaw, I might add, but entertaining. Said by Roger Wright about me.

Colin Davies wrote: I believe a lot of people would like to "chuck in the corporate towel" I've had 2 friends that chucked........ one sold everything he had, took his kids out of school, move to St Thomas, bought a 41 foot Morgan. Lived on it for six months. Met people on the island, rented a hilltop (over the bay) cottage at a good price and stayed there for a total of 3 years. Got islland fever, ran out of money and came back to the US. Another gave up an Asst. VP position to build bird houses (generally did wood crafts) to sell in a local resort. That lasted a year, then he looked for gold in Nevada/Arizona for a year or so. Eventually wound up back in town in a somewhat menial clerical position. Neither would trade their experience. Mike

To be perfectly honest with you I was going to post them anyway, I was just looking for a place to do so. I choose here because to me, ignoring the sub meaning, that song suggests that you should enjoy life, so if a simple life is what you seek and you can make it work, go for it. Me, I'd like a large grassy field and a herd all of my own, but that's for another day... :suss:

Brad Jennings wrote: as poetry or not but that's the first thing I thought of when I started reading your post. Good job, whether that was the intention or not. :-O thanks. It was not my intention though. In fact I am not even a fan of poetry, prefering long verbose sentences and paragraphs, with whole words, not force fitted ones :) I guess I see code all day long, code with no aesthetics to it, just pure, rational, technical code. So when I get the chance to type non-code I try and be a bit more, for lack of a better word, poetic. So do you live a simple life? Ever wanted to? Is it possible?

I guess my life's pretty simple, I grew up in the countryside, away from all the traffic and noise of the city. And, until last year, I had only held simple jobs, like supermarket stock boy or cook in a restaurant. I kind of like the analogy from the movie office space, "What would you do if you had a million dollars?" or more generally "What would you do if money wasn't an issue?" My response would be exactly the same as the guy on office space, nothing at all, although the guy's neighbor's response sounds pretty good (two chicks at once). Is the simple life a romantic dalliance these days? Am I a unhinged - from reality- nut when I wish for the opportunity to chuck in the corporate towel, find a beach side cottage and spend the remainder of my days living a simple, honest life? The more money I make, the less satisfying I find it. Even my short term sacrifice for long term peace idea seems not worth it at times. Anyone here live a simple life, just popping into CP every now and then, when the wind blows and you can't rather go down to paddle in the ocean?

Dr. M. Scott Peck says in the beginning of his book: "Life is difficult. This is a great truth..., because once we truly see this truth, we transcend it." The idea is taken from the Four Noble Truths as taught by Buddha. All life is interconnected at some level, however, there are things which just really do not and probably will not effect your happiness to any great degree. Those can generally be ignored beyond academic thought. Regarding details which effect your daily life, there are things beyond your control, some you can avoid and some you cannot. Then there are things within your realm of control, somewhat anyway. Those things beyond your control which are unpleasant and can be avoided at will should be until you have the means and desire to address them appropriately. Those you can't avoid, you just need to learn how to cope with. (making money to afford the lifestyle you decide is comfortable, death of loved ones, etc..) This is the "life is difficult" part. Those things within a reasonable amount of control, include your happiness in work, relationships, how you spend your free time, lifestyle, etc... This is where you can make life as simple as you like, or as complex as you want. I believe much of lifes happiness and simplicity is your outlook on things. You can waste your time trying to change those things out of your control, and make life complicated and miserable, or you can enjoy those things within your grasp to change. I think my life is pretty simple. I work to pay the bills, and luckily I even enjoy my job mostly. The other 120 hrs./week however I can do whatever I want. It's great! Plus it beats the hell out of farming and hunting to survive. :) BW "Gandalf. Yes. That is what they used to call me. Gandalf the Grey. *I* am Gandalf the White." - Gandalf the White
