I woke up late this morning, 8:20am and turned on the radio, the first thing I heard was a Columbia joke, It was a few minutes later that they explained what had happened. Whilst I believe the dead are dead I still think an interval af decency is requried for mourning. Regardz Colin J Davies

Don't tell me they were recycling the old Challenger disaster jokes. They weren't very funny the first time. Michael The avalanche has started, it's too late for the pebbles to vote.

I have found it is a very British thing to tell a joke about something that is either a tragedy or similar. I don't think it is to deal with it, or through disrespect, but rather just the way things are done over here, and people in turn accept that and continue with the humour. Maybe it's that stiff upper lip thing, I don't know, but the first thing my father told me after hearing the news was a (tastefully done) joke. I really don't think there is any harm in it; it's merely a cultural thing. Maybe NZ has some of the same?

OTOH, amazingly many people cope with overwhelming emotional stress by joking. And very little of it is through disrespect either, IMO. It's amazing how much tastefully done jokes can relieve the tension over a stressful situation. It is said that hundreds of years ago the Norse used to laugh fear in the face when they were in terrifying situations (like battle). I think the jokes are similar in that, though they do not make the stress go away, they certainly help to get through the day. There's a joke pic doing the round called "What really happened" with a picture of a bank of monitors in the shuttle with Windows blue-screen-of-deaths as well.
