Add existing article as an alternative

Why can't existing articles be added as alternatives to other ones? Would be a nice feature
Interesting idea. Do you have a specific example?

This article was featured today: Design pattern – Inversion of control and Dependency injection[^] My article is an alternative: Get injected into the world of inverted dependencies[^] Another articles might handle the same subject (for instance two articles about code first for entity framework).

I don't get it. When clicking 'Alternative' i do not see how to add an existing article. The only option i have is 'Add your own alternative version' which starts the editor. How do i add an existing article (not necessarily my own) as an alternative? Second, it would be great to see immediately how many alternative articles are linked. Like the 'Revision (3)' link does. It shows the number in parenthesis.
