    Under 'Notifications', there is a check box, which when selected can be marked as read and also there a green tick mark to the right, which does the same job. Are these BOTH necessary? Could do with either of the two. Just a thought..

      The checkboxes allow you to select a bunch at once, or they are used by the "Select All" checkbox at the top. This is useful when you're in the mode of thinking "let me collect together all the ones I want to mark as read in one go. The green tick mark is, technically, not needed, but allows you to mark items as read in a casual, ad-hoc, disorganised manner.

This is useful when you're in the mode of thinking "let me collect together all the ones I want to mark as read in one go.
