Yeah, you are right the 9290 is pure overkill. I personally am a Phillips zealot because of the T9, I can text faster on my phone with one hand now then I can type with two. "Darn if only they made T9 Keyboards " I have never seen the speaker phone working, but yeah brilliant idea. Pity conversiona attachments don't seem to exist. Another Featur I have wanted for ages id that when the phone is in the house or office with roam phone connectivity about that it should switch to land lines. OF course this doesn't fit into business models of wireless providers and makers. It would be nice to develop a proper web app for cell phones, although I ahven't seen a position for it yet. Although I do have one idea. :-)" in the burner" Regardz Colin J Davies

I don't have any experience with the 8310, but I have the 8210[^], which I know is a much older model of the same phone, but if the 8310 is anything like the 8210, it's awesome - the 8210 was really ahead of it's time. It's also nice to finally have a phone that fits in my pocket. Paul van der Walt wrote: I also got sick of waiting for my messages or whatever to load Yeah, that was so annoying. I tried to key in ahead, but half the time it was so slow the Erase command would go to the wrong SMS. Or worse, when scrolling through names to dial I would be thinking ahead while it caught up and it would then dial the wrong person. Doh. I hear the new Sony/Ericssons though have overcome the problem. Paul van der Walt wrote: feel that, unlike computers, cellphones haven't earned the right to be slow yet. This is one reason why I am avoiding all these clever gimicky phones with Java capabilities, cameras and colour screens. They get cluttered up and become slow. Phones are for calling/receiving and SMS.

Ok so I am going later to upgrade my phone, contract is up and if I sell my soul for another 24 months I get a free phone. My current Nokia 3310 has been brilliant. Works like a bomb, never had any problems and it is not fancy. Just does it's job and does it well. So if no other phone takes my fancy then I am just going to stick with another 3310. However a co-worker has the Nokia 8310 and it is pretty sweet. I like the fact that it has a FM radio, handy for keeping up to date with the cricket. It also has good style. It also links up to a PC and syncs with Outlook which is a fancy feature I might actually use! Anyone else used a 8310? Any problems? Any other Nokia phones you would recommend? I am not looking for the phone with the most gadgets. In fact I want a simple phone. thanks.

The 8310 is nice, but I'd say rather go for the 7210. It rocks - the colour screen means you can convert your photo's to become "wallpaper" for you phone - currently I have one of 2 fish eagles I saw in Kruger on mine, and it reminds me of home each time I look at it. Another bonus is the polyphonic ringtones - still annoying, but not quite as bad as the old ones... It also has the radio and it comes with an SDK - unfortunately Java. If you want an MS SDK you will have to fork out a little more for the brand new 6100 (also a pretty sweet little phone). (perhaps this is no longer a simple phone however  ). If you do go for the 8310, please do all mankind a favour and get the blue not the red cover! :)

Have you hold 8310 in your own hand before? If you compare the stability by holding a 8310 and a 3310 you can feel it in your hands directly! IMO 8310 isn't a stable phone, it's too plastic. If you drop/throw a 8310 and a 3310 in the wall (not so hard) or just try drop them once... which one do you think will fall in pieces first? 8310, right? I had a 3310 before but I change to Ericsson T65 because it had WAP and GPRS, plus it had no plastic feeling when I held in in my hand. My sister had an 8310. It looked nice, had cool features, and she even had this nice colour scheme for it. Problem was it was too damned small, and she didn't notice when it fell through the coin slit on the bottom of her jacket pocket, well not until it hit the ground and smashed into many little twisted shaped bits of plastic anyway. A phone can have all the features, but if it falls apart on the first bounce from a relatively common dropping height then I wouldn't bother wasting your money on it. I've only had Motorola's to date, though not for any real reason other than I happened to find them cheap on eBay and they seemed reasonably relibable. My currently one is a v66 (second edition, new menus) and whilst it is nothing fancy the sound quality is really very good indeed. In fact that deserves a special mention: if you have ever tried to hold a mobile conversation in a pub on a Saturday night and not been able to hear the other person, then that is the phone to get. I have no idea if whatever techniques Motorola used on that phone have been carried through to their other models, but I sure hope so for if they have then they have got me as a customer for a long time to come. If you plan on going to the US then make sure you get a tri-band phone else you'll need to hire one ot buy a second phone for the trip/s which can be quite expensive if your plan doesn't offer them included. One tip though: do not buy a Motorola T720 on principle. The amount of shit adverts we have to put up with on ITV1* for those damned things is enough to make me destroy any T720 I see in public and violently beat to death the owners. "HelloMoto", their annoying catch phrase, is to me what a white man going up to a black gang in New York and calling out "what's up my nigger" is to a black gang in New York. * They usually show the James Bond films, which is when I am forced to watch them

Thanks for the long reply. Actually my co-worker has dropped his 8310 a few times and it has held up well. I was also weary about it's build quality but have been proven wrong. But saying that I have stuck with my 3310 series. I could either up my monthly call charges and get the 8310, or stay with the 3310 and then have a 75% discount. No brainer.
